The department received a $20,000 grant from the Wild- horse Foundation to purchase the police dog and pay for training and equipment needed. UCSO Deputy Cody Marcum will be partnered with Skoty, an 18-month-old Belgian Mali- nois, and after a period of train- ing are expected to be ready for duty in early March. “Public safety canines have proven to be a valuable asset for their respective agencies and communities in which they serve,” a news release from USCO stated. “Their unique abilities allow them to perform many duties, which include detecting narcotics, tracking suspects and miss- ing or lost persons, assisting our schools with drug preven- tion and school safety, enhanc- ing offi cer safety, and helping to build positive relationships between law enforcement and our communities.” The sheriff’s offi ce previ- ously had a K-9 unit, but the K-9 passed away in 2014 and the program was shelved. The sheriff’s offi ce expressed their “deep appre- ciation” for the Wildhorse Foundation, the Confederated Tribes of the Umatilla Indian Reservation and the Wildhorse Resort & Casino. Thorson said no serious injuries were reported that he was aware of and that all lanes were cleared on the bridge.
