The Umatilla County Sher-
iff’s Offi ce is restarting its K-9
program.
The department received a
$20,000 grant from the Wild-
horse Foundation to purchase
the police dog and pay for
training and equipment needed.
UCSO Deputy Cody Marcum
will be partnered with Skoty,
an 18-month-old Belgian Mali-
nois, and after a period of train-
ing are expected to be ready for
duty in early March.
“Public safety canines have
proven to be a valuable asset
for their respective agencies
and communities in which
they serve,” a news release
from USCO stated. “Their
unique abilities allow them to
perform many duties, which
include detecting narcotics,
tracking suspects and miss-
ing or lost persons, assisting
our schools with drug preven-
tion and school safety, enhanc-
ing offi cer safety, and helping
to build positive relationships
between law enforcement and
our communities.”
The sheriff’s offi ce previ-
ously had a K-9 unit, but the
K-9 passed away in 2014 and
the program was shelved.
The
sheriff’s
offi ce
expressed their “deep appre-
ciation” for the Wildhorse
Foundation, the Confederated
Tribes of the Umatilla Indian
Reservation and the Wildhorse
Resort & Casino.

Thorson said the crashes
halted traffi c from about

included eight cars on
the Washington side and
“roughly 15” on the Oregon
side, Thorson said.
On the Washington side,
Thorson said there was freez-

crash was caused by drivers
going too fast for the road-

Thorson said no serious
injuries were reported that
he was aware of and that all
lanes were cleared on the
