EDUCATION/NEWS A12 • HERMISTONHERALD.COM Students earn college credits during La Grande campus visit HERMISTON HERALD Students from several Eastern Oregon school dis- tricts recently visited the Eastern Oregon University campus and earned some college credits during the process. A Nov. 13 College Level Examination Pro- gram event — CLEP Day — was organized by the Migrant Education Pro- gram of the InterMoun- tain Education Service District. The 33 participating high school students were from Hermiston, Umatilla, Irrigon, Boardman and Milton-Freewater schools. In addition to touring the campus and experi- encing an actual college class, the students were able to take the CLEP test for Spanish. The exam tests college level knowl- edge of a particular sub- ject. Those who passed the exam earned college credit as if they had actu- WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 27, 2019 Umatilla County contributes $50,000 toward Hermiston project HERMISTON HERALD Photo contributed by Michele Madril Area high school students participated in a Nov. 13 College Level Examination Program event at Eastern Oregon University in La Grande. ally taken the courses. Kris Mulvihill and Brenda Flores, IMESD’s Migrant Education Grad- uation Specialists, orga- nized the event, along with Cristian Anguiano, Out- reach Coordinator at EOU. Mulvihil said participating students earned at least 12 college credits by taking the CLEP test — and most earned 24 college credits. “This was a wonderful opportunity for our stu- dents to not only experi- ence a college campus, but to get a step ahead on col- NO MORE GUTTER CLEANING, OR YOUR MONEY BACK – GUARANTEED! lege credits before they even go to college,” Mul- vihill said. Umatilla County will chip in $50,000 toward the South Hermiston Industrial Park. The Umatilla County Board of Commissioners unan- imously agreed to the contribution at a meeting Tuesday morning. The city of Hermiston is planning to develop a $2.9 million addition of roads, sewer and water infrastructure behind the former Hermiston Foods plant with the help of a U.S. Economic Development Administration grant that is expected to cover 50-80% of the costs. If the city secures the grant, the rest would be paid by the city, the county, and neighboring property owners who would be assessed through a Local Improvement District the city plans to form. At the board meeting, Commissioner George Murdock said the project was meant to drive growth in that area of town. “If you go over there and drive around in that area, it’s amazing how much has already occurred,” he said. “A lot of new businesses in that area.” The board also unanimously adopted two ordinances that adopted the charter amendments approved by voters earlier this month. One amendment clarifi es the name of the Umatilla County Sheriff’s Offi ce while the other eliminates the primary for county elections where there are only two candidates. The latter amendment will be in effect for the commis- sioner and sheriff races in 2020.
