Students earn college credits
during La Grande campus visit
HERMISTON HERALD
Students from several
Eastern Oregon school dis-
tricts recently visited the
Eastern Oregon University
campus and earned some
college credits during the
process.
A Nov. 13 College
Level Examination Pro-
gram event — CLEP Day
— was organized by the
Migrant Education Pro-
gram of the InterMoun-
tain Education Service
District.
The 33 participating
high school students were
from Hermiston, Umatilla,
Irrigon, Boardman and
Milton-Freewater schools.
In addition to touring
the campus and experi-
encing an actual college
class, the students were
able to take the CLEP test
for Spanish. The exam
tests college level knowl-
edge of a particular sub-
ject. Those who passed
the exam earned college

Mulvihil said participating
students earned at least 12
college credits by taking
the CLEP test — and most
earned 24 college credits.

Umatilla County will chip in $50,000 toward the South
Hermiston Industrial Park.
The Umatilla County Board of Commissioners unan-
imously agreed to the contribution at a meeting Tuesday
morning.
The city of Hermiston is planning to develop a $2.9
million addition of roads, sewer and water infrastructure
behind the former Hermiston Foods plant with the help of
a U.S. Economic Development Administration grant that is
expected to cover 50-80% of the costs.
If the city secures the grant, the rest would be paid by
the city, the county, and neighboring property owners who
would be assessed through a Local Improvement District the
city plans to form.
At the board meeting, Commissioner George Murdock
said the project was meant to drive growth in that area of
town.
“If you go over there and drive around in that area, it’s
amazing how much has already occurred,” he said. “A lot of
new businesses in that area.”
The board also unanimously adopted two ordinances that
adopted the charter amendments approved by voters earlier
this month.
One amendment clarifi es the name of the Umatilla County
Sheriff’s Offi ce while the other eliminates the primary for
county elections where there are only two candidates.
The latter amendment will be in effect for the commis-
sioner and sheriff races in 2020.

This is your chance to be part of a dynamic,
family newspaper. We have an immediate
opportunity for an accurate and hard-
working senior reporter at one of Oregon’s
best small daily newspapers based in
scenic and historic Pendleton. This is a key
reporting assignment covering two of the
newsroom’s bigger beats - Umatilla County
government and public safety. We value spot
news hustle but also prize deeper enterprise
pieces. You won’t just cover crime. You’ll
delve into politics, personalities, budget
issues, cycles of trauma and violence, but
also stories of success and achievement. You
will collaborate with almost every other beat
reporter at the newspaper. Most importantly,
you’ll highlight the powerful human stories
at the center of every public safety issue.
The successful candidate will build sources
and mine the community and social media
for leads.
