Water rights and environ- mental due diligence in real estate transactions will be among the topics regional water experts and attorneys cover at Dunn Carney’s annual Eastern Oregon Ag Summit. The event is scheduled from 7:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 15, at the Maxwell Event Center, 145 N 1st Place, Hermiston. The free, half-day confer- ence will feature a range of speakers focusing on state and regional water, labor and intellectual property laws and issues in agricul- ture. Tom Myrum, execu- tive director of the Washing- ton State Water Resources Association, will provide an update on the Columbia River Treaty Negotiations. Dunn Carney’s East- ern Oregon Ag Summit includes panel discussions and presentations by indus- try leaders from around the region, as well as lawyers from law firm Dunn Car- ney’s Agriculture and Natu- ral Resources Team. “This is a unique oppor- tunity for farmers, ranchers and processors in the region to hear directly from indus- try and organization lead- ers who have a seat at the table in dealing with issues that affect them,” says Kate Moore, leader of Dunn Car- ney’s environmental prac- tice and chair of the firm’s Eastern Oregon Ag Summit. “We want attendees to ask questions and talk with each other and with us.” A complimentary conti- nental breakfast and lunch are included. To register for the event, visit dunncarney. com/EOAgSummit19. BRIEFS Forum solicits feedback on veteran resources Input is being sought regard- ing behavioral health policies and resources for veterans in Oregon. According to a survey completed by more than 4,000 veterans, one in four Oregon veterans experience frustration in seeking care for men- tal health or substance use issues. The Oregon Department of Veterans’ Affairs and Oregon Health Authority are interested in feedback in regards to the study’s findings and further recom- mendations. Veterans and their family members, those currently serving in the military as well as healthcare pro- viders and policymakers are encour- aged to attend an upcoming gathering to share their thoughts. A local forum is Tuesday, Oct. 8 at the Pendleton Convention Center, 1601 Westgate. It runs from 10:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. and lunch is provided. In addition, child care assistance, trans- portation and translation services are available upon request. For more information or to reg- ister, visit www.redegroup.co/veter- an-bh-forums or call 503-764-9696. To read the report, visit www.oregon. gov/OHA/HSD/AMH/Pages/Veter- ans.aspx. Knights of Columbus host Polish dinner Authentic Polish food is featured during an upcoming event hosted by the Our Lady of Angels Knights of Columbus. Mark Gomolski, the group’s grand knight, will put his Polish heritage to work as he prepares everything from homemade Polish sausage and sauer- kraut to stuffed dumplings and more. The event is Saturday, Oct 12 at 6 p.m. official rules or to register, visit www. uscellular.com/communityconnec- tions. For questions, send an email to communityconnections@uscellular. com. in the church parish hall, 565 W. Hermiston Ave., Hermiston. The cost is $20 per person or $65 for a fam- ily of four. Tickets can be purchased Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the church office or by calling 541-567-5812. Gomolski said that the Knights organization works to help people in the community — serving others, regardless of their faith. They pro- vide help to victims of disaster, seniors that need a little assistance with home projects, as well as making food bas- kets for those in need and offering a free meal each Friday morning at the church hall. For more information about the local Knights of Columbus, contact Gomolski at marek57@sbcglobal.net. Rep. Greg Walden, R-Hood River, encourages Oregon students who are interested in attending one of the United States service academies to apply for an official nomination through his office. Each year, students from across Oregon’s Second District are nom- inated for acceptance to the service academies after being recommended by Walden’s Service Academy Nom- ination Board, which includes active and retired military officers. They will interview potential candidates and make recommendations based on each student’s academic performance, extra- curricular involvement and character. The service academies available for nominations from members of Con- gress include the Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, Colorado; the Military Academy at West Point, New York; the Naval Academy in Annap- olis, Maryland; and the Merchant Marine Academy at Kings Point, New York. The U.S. Coast Guard Academy in New London, Connecticut, does not require a congressional nomination for appointment. Nomination applications must be submitted by the end of October and can be completed at www.walden. house.gov/academynominations. Walden’s formal nominations will be announced in late December. Final admission selections will be deter- mined by officials at each academy in early spring. Local youth organizations can earn up to $1,000 through a U.S. Cellular program. In its fifth year, Community Con- nections provides sponsorship support to help youth groups pay for expenses such as travel, equipment and uni- forms. To date, nearly 2,900 travel- ing sports teams, STEM programs, school marching bands, dance squads and more have benefited from the pro- gram — to the tune of more than $1.3 million. Academic and athletic groups that include kids and teens through 12th grade need to register to become eligi- ble to receive sponsorship funds. Once they are registered, groups have 14 days to rally support from their friends, families and members of the commu- nity. Participants will be asked to com- plete a variety of online activities, such as following U.S. Cellular on social media, watching a video or answering a short survey.
