WEDNESDAY, DECEMBER 5, 2018 HERMISTONHERALD.COM • A11 SPORTS Lewiston ruins Hermiston’s season opener PREPS continued from Page A10 By ANNIE FOWLER STAFF WRITER Echo A big second quarter by Lew- iston was more than Hermiston could handle on Friday night. The Bengals went on a 20-11 run in the second to take a 28-20 lead en route to a 57-45 victory over the Bulldogs at the Dawg House. “It’s a measuring stick,” Hermiston coach Juan Rodri- guez said. “We knew without Jor- dan (Thomas) it would be hard to score. We are young and it was the first varsity game for some of them,” The 6-foot-4 Thomas, who was in a minor car accident Mon- day, was held out of the game for precautionary measures. In a first quarter where there were only three made baskets, the Bulldogs (0-1) took a 9-8 lead, getting five of their points at the free-throw line. Hermiston stretched its lead to 13-8 early in the second quar- ter, and led 20-14 after Katelyn Heideman drained a 3-pointer. But the well went dry for the Bulldogs in the last 4 minutes of the first half. Lewiston would score the first six points of the third quarter, and led 34-20 before the Bulldogs finally hit a shot, ending a 7 min- ute, 6 second drought. Hermiston would match the Bengals point for point in the quarter, but trailed 42-34. The Bulldogs got no closer than nine points in the fourth quarter. The Bengals could have extended their in lead the last minute of the game, but went 2 of 7 from the free-throw line. For the game, the Bengals were 21 of 34. “Our defense was good, but we got tired and started fouling,” Rodriguez said. Jazlyn Romero led the Bull- dogs with 16 points, and played all but about 2 minutes of the game. “Because of Jordan not being in, Jazlyn was in all the time,” Rodriguez said. “I thought she STAFF PHOTO BY E.J. IRRIGON: The Knights picked up a pair of wins at the Ione Basketball Bonanza, sinking Helix and Pine Eagle by identical 67-29 scores on Friday and Saturday. The Class 3A Irrigon team was led by Keith Fleming with 22 on Friday. They played Weston-McEwen on Tuesday, but results weren’t avail- able by press time.
