A big second quarter by Lew-
iston was more than Hermiston
could handle on Friday night.
The Bengals went on a 20-11
run in the second to take a 28-20
lead en route to a 57-45 victory
over the Bulldogs at the Dawg
House.
“It’s a measuring stick,”
Hermiston coach Juan Rodri-
guez said. “We knew without Jor-
dan (Thomas) it would be hard to
score. We are young and it was
the first varsity game for some of
them,”
The 6-foot-4 Thomas, who
was in a minor car accident Mon-
day, was held out of the game for
precautionary measures.
In a first quarter where there
were only three made baskets, the
Bulldogs (0-1) took a 9-8 lead,
getting five of their points at the
free-throw line.
Hermiston stretched its lead
to 13-8 early in the second quar-
ter, and led 20-14 after Katelyn
Heideman drained a 3-pointer.
But the well went dry for the
Bulldogs in the last 4 minutes of
the first half.
Lewiston would score the first
six points of the third quarter, and
led 34-20 before the Bulldogs
finally hit a shot, ending a 7 min-
ute, 6 second drought.
Hermiston would match the
Bengals point for point in the
quarter, but trailed 42-34. The
Bulldogs got no closer than nine
points in the fourth quarter. The
Bengals could have extended
their in lead the last minute of the
game, but went 2 of 7 from the
free-throw line. For the game, the
Bengals were 21 of 34.
“Our defense was good, but
we got tired and started fouling,”
Rodriguez said.
Jazlyn Romero led the Bull-
dogs with 16 points, and played
all but about 2 minutes of the
game.
“Because of Jordan not being
in, Jazlyn was in all the time,”
Rodriguez said. “I thought she

The Echo boys left the Horizon
Christian Tournament without a
win, losing opener 70-33 to Trinity
Lutheran and dropping Saturday’s
follow-up to Perrydale 63-40. The
Echo girls opened their season
with a 47-24 loss to Perrydale at
the tournament.
Both teams will play at the
Wallowa Lions Tournament on
Saturday.
Morrow County boys
RIVERSIDE: The Pirates bat-
tled but couldn’t overcome Taft
in a tournament matchup at West-
side Christian on Saturday, losing
53-29.
“(Taft) had two 6-foot-7 boys
on their team,” said head coach
Clair Costello. “We just couldn’t
get past them.”
The loss came on the heels of a
58-41 loss to Faith Bible Friday to
open the tournament.
IRRIGON: The Knights
picked up a pair of wins at the Ione
Basketball Bonanza, sinking Helix
and Pine Eagle by identical 67-29
scores on Friday and Saturday. The
Class 3A Irrigon team was led by
Keith Fleming with 22 on Friday.
They played Weston-McEwen on
Tuesday, but results weren’t avail-
able by press time.
HEPPNER: The Mustangs
lost a pair over the weekend, first
to Willamina 61-41 and then to St.
Paul 57-51. They hosted Mac-Hi
on Tuesday.
Morrow County girls
RIVERSIDE: The Pirates
took care of business on Satur-
day, beating Taft 51-21 at the
Westside Christian Tournament.
Coach Clair Costello noticed their
improvement on both sides of the
ball after a 39-32 loss to Faith
Bible on Friday. “We played a lot
better today,” he said. “We had
strong offense and defense. It was
a good game.”
IRRIGON: The Knights domi-
nated in the Ione Tournament, first
sinking Helix 60-14 then beating
Pine Eagle 66-18. JaLay Burns
scored 25 points in the opener.
HEPPNER: The Mustangs lost
a 46-42 game on Friday to Willa-
mina, then a wider 68-35 loss on
Saturday. Sydney Wilson scored
seven for the Mustangs in Satur-
day’s game.
