A4 • HERMISTONHERALD.COM WEDNESDAY, JULY 18, 2018 COMMUNITY BRIEFS Park series features country band STAFF PHOTO BY TAMMY MALGESINI Youths created creatures for the open class Fruit and Vegetable Zoo division for the 2017 Umatilla County Fair. Open class entries must be pre-registered by July 25. Fair to ‘Stirrup Some Fun’ Open class pre-registration deadline is July 25 provides people with an opportunity to interpret the theme through a project. In addition to the creative arts, open class entries — which are not a part of 4-H or FFA — are available for beef, dairy, sheep, Jackpot Lamb, goats and a variety of small animals. Exhibitors may purchase a discounted season pass — $14 or $10 for 4-H and FFA — by showing a pink copy of their exhibitor tag. Regular sea- son pass prices are $40 for adults, $30 for seniors and $24 for youths ages 6-12. To have items judged and be eligible for fair pre- miums, exhibitors need to register in advance. Projects don’t have to be completed, but they must be pre-regis- tered by Wednesday, July 25 at 5 p.m. By TAMMY MALGESINI COMMUNITY EDITOR People are encouraged to show off their creativity by entering open class exhib- its in the Umatilla County Fair — including everything from clothing, baked goods and sewing to photography, fine arts and hobby projects. This year’s theme is “Let’s Stirrup Some Fun!,” and what better way to do that than share your talents with others? In addition to general submissions, many departments have a fair theme category — which Exhibitors need to read department and division rules in the Umatilla County Exhibitors Guide. Entry forms, the guide and addi- tional information are avail- able at www.umatillacounty. net/fair. For those who don’t have access to a computer, assis- tance is available at the fair- grounds office at the East- ern Oregon Trade and Event Center, 1705 Airport Road, Hermiston. In addition, local libraries offer computer use and internet access. After completing the registration process, be sure to write down the online confirma- tion number. The actual entries for most open class entries, including home econom- ics, arts and creative kids, as well as horticulture and flo- riculture, need to be dropped off Sunday, Aug. 5 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the fair- grounds at EOTEC. Livestock and small ani- mals will be received Mon- day Aug. 7 from 7 a.m. to noon or 5-8 p.m. And, Jack- pot Lamb are to be brought in Thursday, Aug. 9 from 7-10 a.m. Those who haven’t reg- istered by the deadline may bring entries to the fair to be exhibited. However, they will be for display only and won’t be judged. For more information or questions, contact call fair@ umatillacounty.net, 541- 567-6121, or stop by the fair office at EOTEC. It’s open Monday through Fridays from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., but is closed for lunch from noon to 1 p.m. Good Shepherd dietitian receives national certification By TAMMY MALGESINI COMMUNITY EDITOR The National Certification Board for Diabetes Educators recently served up a reason for Katrina J. Larsen to celebrate. A registered dietitian at the Diabetes and Nutrition Center at Good Shepherd Health Care System, Larsen achieved Certified Diabetes Educator status by successfully completing the certifica- tion examination. Nick Bejarano, Good Shepherd’s marketing and communi- cations director, said candidates must meet rigorous eligibility requirements to be afforded the opportunity to take the exam. Achieving certification, Bejarano said, demonstrates that the health care professional possesses distinct and spe- cialized knowledge. The result, he said, promotes increased quality of care for people with diabetes. Currently, there are nearly 20,000 diabetes educators across the country who hold the special certification. Beja- rano said many rural hospitals might have one, but Good Shepherd is proud to now have three — Larsen, along with Nancy Gummer and Cassandra Zabel — providing services at the Diabetes and Nutrition Center. “To have three is really a benefit to PHOTO CONTRIBUTED BY NICK BEJARANO Katrina J. At an early age Kris- ten Oja discovered what would become the three prime motivators for her art — the family dog, exercise/physical educa- tion and nature. A biology instructor at Blue Mountain Commu- nity College, Oja’s cur- rent artwork focuses on her perception of the parts of life that bring her joy as filtered through her imag- ination. To view her lat- est creations, stop by the Hermiston Public Library as her work is currently on display throughout the month. Oja became interested in encaustic painting after viewing a friend’s work. Also referred to as hot wax painting, she delved fur- ther into the process after taking a class from Walla Walla artist Colleen Mon- ette at Pendleton Center for the Arts.
