Students also receive a “toe token” for ev- ery 10 laps that they can pin to show their progress. “The MHES marathon is an important tradition in Umatilla,” district Super- intendent Heidi Sipe said. “It’s exciting to see it in its 30th year and know that many generations of Uma- tilla students have enjoyed this experience.” Kelly Stefani, special ed- ucation assistant, has helped with the marathon for 13 years. She watched her chil- dren participate and now braves the wind and the sun to punch cards for the cur- rent students. “Some of them do ¿ve, six, seven, eight laps a re- cess,” she said. “We just try to keep their motivation up.” Some students need extra encouragement as the min- utes march on. Others have taken ownership of the mar- athon idea and run with it. “It’s really fun,” fourth-grader Eric Camaril- lo said. “We just want to run and see how far we can go.” PALMER: continued from Page A1 2012 he stepped down from his position to make way for Palmer to take over.
