IN BRIEF
RACE:

Students who complete a
full punch card of 88 laps —
about 9 miles — will receive
a water bottle. Students also
receive a “toe token” for ev-
ery 10 laps that they can pin
to show their progress.
“The MHES marathon
is an important tradition in
Umatilla,” district Super-
intendent Heidi Sipe said.
“It’s exciting to see it in its
30th year and know that
many generations of Uma-
tilla students have enjoyed
this experience.”
Kelly Stefani, special ed-
ucation assistant, has helped
with the marathon for 13
years. She watched her chil-
dren participate and now
braves the wind and the sun
to punch cards for the cur-
rent students.
“Some of them do ¿ve,
six, seven, eight laps a re-
cess,” she said. “We just
try to keep their motivation
up.”
Some students need extra
encouragement as the min-
utes march on. Others have
taken ownership of the mar-
athon idea and run with it.
“It’s
really
fun,”
fourth-grader Eric Camaril-
lo said. “We just want to run
and see how far we can go.”

Marketing class to help
business, nonprofits

Fourth-graders Arturo Arreguin and Angel Saucedo lead the pack during the marathon at McNary
Heights Elementary School on Monday.
“It was time for me to
move on and I knew it
was in good hands with
Trampis,” he said. “He
built up the participation
level of the program ... he
was just the kind of per-
son that left everything he
touched better than when
he started.”
And when he got in-
volved with lacrosse, he
developed a dream to be-
come the Bulldogs’ varsi-
ty coach, a dream that was
realized this past season.
“It was his dream to
coach there and he was
so enthused with the way
the program was going,”
Zwiefelhofer said.
