BULLDOGS: continued from Page A10 So, before the second quar- ter, they went back to their attacking-style defense with switches and hedg- es, and totally limited the Spartans. After scoring 17 points in the ¿rst quarter, Marist scored just 19 the rest of the game. “The difference was, we just went ahead and switched everything and bodied people up and forced them to make a sec- ond, third move, second, third decision,” Hoffert said. “And we were more successful for that defen- sively than they were of- fensively. “Obviously, what we do is effective. It was proven the last three quarters. Of- fensively, we were slow the ¿rst quarter. :e just weren’t taking it to Marist.” The Bulldogs took con- trol in the second quarter behind hot shooting from Sara Ramirez. The Bull- dogs started the quarter on a 12-5 run that catapulted them in front at 23-22 with 4:20 on the clock. Hermis- ton came back with a com- bination of 3-pointers and free throws. Ramirez made a 3-pointer and a layup in the sequence and had ¿ve of Hermiston’s 12 points during the run. “:e didn’t really panic, but i know that none of us wanted to lose, so we were gonna do whatever it took to win,” Edmiston said of the ¿rst-half comeback. Hermiston pulled away in the second quarter, en- tering halftime leading 31- 24. After scoring 10 points in the paint during the ¿rst quarter, Marist got none in the second, indication a strong second-quarter de- fensive performance. Hermiston pulled away for good in the third. The Bulldogs scored 15 points to Marist’s six, growing the lead to 18 points at the buzzer. The lead grew to nearly 30 points in the fourth quarter, giving Hermiston a convincing win to take home the fourth HERMISTONHERALD.COM • A11 Webb leads horde of raging Vikings on all-league teams EOL releases girls and boys postseason honors By MATT ENTRUP Staff Writer The Umatilla girls bas- ketball team took care of business on the court this season, and the Eastern Or- egon League coaches took care of the Vikings when it came time to name the all- league rosters. Of the Vikings’ nine players, seven were award- ed a spot in the EOL All- League teams, led by senior guard Sidney :ebb as 3lay- er of the Year. Umatilla coach Scott Bow, who was named Coach of the Year, said he didn’t see it coming. “It was very surprising,” he said of the team’s all- league haul. “It was more than I expected would get honored and put on there.” He said it didn’t take any lobbying from him, either. “It wasn’t too much of me doing the work, it was other coaches wanting to put them on there,” he said. “They felt like they were all just so important to what we did that they wanted to make sure they all were honored.” :ebb stood out the most during the Vikings’ 8-1 EOL season and district title win, and Bow said it had as much to do with her phys- ical skills as her basketball IQ and leadership qualities. “Not just her ability, more focus was on that she was a coach on the Àoor,” he said. “She controlled the tempo, she controlled everything we were trying to do and just really took care of us that way.” -oining :ebb on the ¿rst team was senior Courtney Dohman and junior Alee- sha :atson. -uniors Brenda Campos and Taija Coffey were named to the second team and seniors Judy Con- treras and Mari 3az were awarded honorable men- tion. “Hats off to the girls,” Bow said. “I’m really proud of what we were able to accomplish and all the hard work they put in.” Riverside had two play- STAFF PHOTO BY SAM BARBEE Umatilla’s Sidney Webb (23) tries to move into the lane against Riverside’s Alondra Caldera (left) and Brenda Avalos during the Vikings’ 49-20 win Thursday in Umatilla. ers honored in junior Lacy Mashos (second team) and freshman Alondra Caldera (honorable mention). Edmiston was also named to the second-team all-tournament team. “On top of how we end- ed, to get that honor from the state, that’s equally as valuable as any state tro- phy,” Hoffert said of the sportsmanship award. “It says a lot of our commu- nity, our players and our fans. I was told it was an overwhelming, unanimous choice. It’s nice to know we’re recognized like that.” ——— MHS (17-11) 17 7 6 6 — 36 HHS (24-4) 10 21 17 17 — 65 MARIST — E McKenney 8, C.Eagen 7, L.
