After a slow start in the ¿rst quarter, the Bulldogs outscored the Spartans 55-19 the rest of the way to an easy victory. Kynzee Padilla was a force inside, grabbing 12 rebounds and scoring 14 points, including go- ing 8-for-8 from the free throw line. Jansen Edmiston led the Bulldogs with 16 points, Sara Ramirez had 15 and Maddy Juul scored 14. It was the second double-digit win of the week for the Bulldogs at the Gill Coliseum tournament after beating Bend on Thursday to earn the spot in Saturday’s game. ³Sunday I reÀected. I think all the girls reÀected,´ head coach Steve Hoffert said. “They said, ‘You know, it was a pretty good year, wasn’t it, Coach?’ We did a lot of good things.´ Hermiston ran through a dif- ¿cult schedule, losing Must four games to some of the best teams in the state. One loss came to the third-place Corvallis Spartans in the ¿rst round of the state tour- nament. Another came to 5A run- ner-up Spring¿eld. A third came to 6A South Medford, a second seed in that tournament, and the fourth to Chaparral (AZ), who went 21-8 this season. “I know we didn’t end where we wanted to, but this season was the most enMoyable for me,´ Ed- miston said. “I didn’t want it to end, but it happened eventually ... After we lost the ¿rst game, we made the most of what we could.´ Though the anticipated return to the state championship game never materialized, Hoffert and his girls look back at the 2015-16 with fond memories. “You look back at our sched- ule, to come out with 24 wins is pretty amazing,´ Hoffert said. “... It’s one of those bitter-sweets. We sat around and we watched the state tournament. We Must felt we didn’t play our best game against Corvallis.´ Padilla, who had an impres- sive tournament in full, had argu- ably her best game of the sea- son on Saturday, recording the double-double in a key moment. Though she wasn’t recognized after the game, an unfortunate part of being a blue-collar play- er, Hoffert said, she gives great reason to once again be excited about next season. “She was outstanding,´ Hof- fert said of the Munior wing. “She had a pretty good state tourna- ment rebounding and defensive- ly. She did a great Mob.´ Hermiston found itself down 11-4 in the ¿rst quarter of Satur- day’s game after an Emma McK- enney 3-pointer, and the Spartans pushed the lead to 11 after two Claire Eagen layups. Hermiston closed the gap some by the end of the period, ¿nishing the initial stanza down 17-10. Marist had good success that frame scoring inside, re- cording 10 points in the paint to Hermiston’s four. Marist’s inside success was a function of a new defense Herm- iston tried. Instead of hedging and switching pick and rolls as usual, they tried to slip under the screens on ball, but struggled. It’s part of their normal defense, Hoffert said, but different enough they couldn’t quite ¿gure it out. See BULLDOGS, A11 STAFF PHOTO BY E.J.
