Offered by the Fraternal Order of Eagles of Herm- iston, previous recipients of the Hermiston Eagles Scholarship are not eligi- ble to apply. Sports boosters set steak feed The Hermiston Booster Club annual steak feed is coming up. Cheese Days return to SAGE Center The upcoming Tilla- mook Cheese Days fea- tures a lasagna meal. Parking lot sale benefits Agape House People can purchase clothing, knick-knacks and some furniture at the Agape House parking lot sale. Diaper Dash helps families in need A 5K and 10K run/walk will collect diapers to be given to mother and babies in need. Sponsored by the Herm- iston Church of the Naz- arene, the Diaper Dash is Saturday, March 5, begin- ning at 8:30 a.m. with a 1-mile dash for kids 5 and under. The event begins and ends at the church, 1520 W. Orchard Ave., Herm- iston. The 5K/10K begins at 9 a.m. The entry fee is a bag of diapers. Church Directory E-mail your community news items to: community@hermistonherald.com Chili contest heats up in Umatilla “We’re trying to make people aware of what organi- zations are out there,” Putnam said. “This way, people will come in and see organizations that need funding and need help with volunteers and their services.” The event is Friday at 6:30 p.m. at Umatilla High School, 1400 Seventh St. Those en- tering the contest must bring their prepared chili in by 6 p.m. People are encouraged to come out and also cheer for the Lady Vikings as the Umatilla High School girls basketball team is hosting a ¿rst round state playoff basketball game. It begins at 6 p.m. Putnam said it will make for an exciting atmosphere during the fundraiser. “It may be a little hectic, but it should be fun,” she said. The Lions Club fundraiser also includes a dessert auc- tion. People are invited to do- nate non-refrigerated desserts that will be auctioned off. In addition to donations made to those nonpro¿t or- ganizations entering the chili contest, the Lions Club will distribute money raised from the event to local community needs. Hired by the Hermiston School District in 2004 as the CREW Room teacher at Ar- mand Larive Middle School, Greybeck later taught human- ities for three years. In 2008, he moved to Hermiston High School where he has focused on building the construction technology and woodworking curriculum. Greybeck previously served in the United States Navy, worked as a carpenter and in program management for aerospace and defense con- tractors in California and Mas- sachusetts. Greybeck retired from the US Navy Reserve in 2008. He also has participated in the Jimmy Carter Habitat for Humanity annual projects. By TAMMY MALGESINI Community Editor Calling all chili cooks — the Umatilla-Irrigon Lions Club is hosting its annual Chili Contest. There is no fee to enter the contest. For those wanting to sample the entries, $3 pro- vides tastes and an opportu- nity to vote for their favorites. In addition to bragging rights, the winner will receive a gift prize. Also, nonpro¿t or- ganizations that are connect- ed to or provide services in Umatilla or Irrigon who enter chili in the contest will receive $1 from the Lions Club for each vote they garner. Cathy Putnam, Lions Club presi- dent, said this is open to any nonpro¿t group, including churches, Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, school groups, service organizations — as long as they have a connection to ei- ther Umatilla or Irrigon. GRADUATIONS HHS teacher receives doctorate degree Hermiston High School construction technology and woodworking teacher Robert Greybeck recently completed the requirements for a doctor of philosophy degree. Greybeck began his course of study with Capella Univer- sity in February 2010, spe- cializing in curriculum and instruction. Three years of academic coursework provid- ed the theoretical framework for his research and doctoral dissertation studying the inte- gration of reading, writing and math skills into the career and technical education curricu- lum.
