WEDNESDAY, JULY 1, 2015 HERMISTONHERALD.COM • A9 COMMUNITY • SPORTS Umatilla Landing Days a hot event Despite high temperatures, many people attend celebration BY SEAN HART HERMISTON HERALD Despite triple dig- it temperatures by early afternoon, hundreds of people attended Umatilla Landing a y s EVENTS D Satur- day, and many planned to return for the fireworks at 10 p.m. tonight. Umatilla Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Karen Hutchin- son-Talaski said fewer people were attending than usual because of the heat, but there was still a steady crowd. “I’d like it to be cooler, but the breeze is nice,” she said. “I think it’s going pretty well. There’s plenty of food and great vendors. There’s lots of ways to stay cool.” Ann Cotterell, Umatil- la, took her grandchildren to the parade and the fes- tivities at Umatilla Marina Park, which continue until the 10 p.m. ¿ reworks dis- play. “We come every year,” she said. “It’s not as busy as it usually is, but it’s re- ally hot. They’ve got a lot of food and a lot of ven- ELDER: continued from page A8 the time we had.” Elder was here the week before the PGA Tour and the U.S. Open came to Chambers Bay, a public course in Uni- versity Place, Washington about an hour south of Seat- tle. Elder also attended the U.S Open.. In spite of complaints about the course and a lack of space for the gallery, El- der thinks holding a major in the Paci¿ c Northwest, the region’s ¿ rst, will help signi¿ - cantly in promoting the game of golf here. “No doubt about it,” he said. “Anytime you can get a major in any part of the country, it’s going to bene¿ t. It’s going to bene¿ t and it’s going to help any area. Just like when the ladies come to Sahalee.” The women’s PGA Tour Championship will be held at Sahalee Country Club in Sammamish, Washington in 2016. “People are gonna be Umatilla Landing Days attendees peruse a variety of vendors at the event Saturday at the Umatilla Marina Park. I think it’s great for a little small-town thing.” Cotterell said she plans to watch the ¿ reworks dis- play from an overlook in McNary and that the show is usually pretty good. Aaron Ham, Umatilla, said more people usually attend, but the temperature probably deterred some people. “It’s pretty dead,” he said. “Maybe at night it will be better.” Jolene MacDonald, Umatilla, said the best part of the event was the parade, and 10-year-old Kaydence Hansen said she was enjoying the event, especially the cotton can- dy and frozen yogurt. Volunteer Judy Sim- mons said people were enjoying the festival, de- spite the temperature. “It all depends on the weather, but nine times out of 10, nature has co- operated,” she said. Simmons said boat rides are usually offered, but organizers could not find any boats this year. She said they have some possible boats they may utilize next year. FOOTBALL: good of an experience.” Though the game was memorable, a 42-41 South win that saw Gammell force a fumble on the second snap of the game, it’s not what the pair will remember the most. That is the bonding and the fun had over the course of the week. A four-event wing eating contest was held at a local Buffalo Wild Wings, and the South won that, too. Looking back, Gammell now realizes the bene¿ t that week gave him. “I kinda learned a lot of skills and just go in and say, ‘Hey, I’m Landon. I’m from Hermiston,’” he said. “It’s really easy to talk to people once you say, ‘Hi.’ You have a lot of similar interests.” “It was really cool meet- ing those guys,” Morter added. “A lot of those guys are pretty cool people. It was kinda neat to meet some of them, people that you’ve played against and maybe you didn’t like on the ¿ eld, but then you meet them in person, and they’re actually pretty nice people. That’s al- ways pretty cool.” STANFIELD: turn a 4-4 game into an 11-4 game. Using six walks, a hit- by-pitch, a ¿ elder’s choice and an error, R/I scored its six runs without a hit. Two of the six walks came with the bases loaded, and the hit-by- pitch also came with the bags packed. Stan¿ eld tried to rally in the home sixth. Bailey’s dou- ble drove home Shane Keltz and to push the count to 11- 7, but more walks and errors gave R/I a couple more runs in the visitor’s seventh. In the ¿ nal game of the weekend, Stan¿ eld played its cleanest game. Though Bai- ley started and was chased after allowing three runs without recording an out, Damian Curiel took the ball and threw the next four in- nings without allowing a run. Meanwhile, Stan¿ eld’s bats awoke for seven runs in the third. Down 5-2, Jenson doubled home Curiel to cut Stan¿ eld’s de¿ cit to one at 5-4. Justin Keeney followed with an RBI double, and Fitzpatrick singled an out later to give Stan¿ eld a 6-5 lead. After a Keith Wampler single, Keltz reached on an error, plating Fitzpatrick and Wampler for an 8-5 lead. Keltz came around on an er- ror to provide the ¿ nal scor- ing. ——— STAFF PHOTO BY SEAN HART continued from page A8 time. You know everybody and you think you’re really social. And plus the support they got was tremendous.” continued from page A8 Renner, Ryan Bailey and Ja- son Fitzpatrick each had two RBIs apiece. Stan¿ eld scored four in the ¿ rst, highlighted by a Makiah Blankenship RBI single, and Stan¿ eld got an- other three in the second, highlighted by an RBI dou- ble from Renner.
