PACIFIC POWER & LIGHT COMPANY ORDNANCE AGAIN SAVES DOLLARS FOR TAXPAYERS o Maj. Gen. L. H. Campbell, Jr., Chief of the Army Ordnance Depart ment, today informed Col. Buyers, commanding, Umatilla Ordnance De pot that Ordnance is reverting to brass and will discontinue the use of steel for the production of all artillery cartridge cases in order to save criti cal man-hours, machine-hours, and costs. It is estimated that the change back to brass will increase artillery ammu nition production 30 per cent and will result in a taxpayers' saving of $100,- 000,000 in 1944. “It became evident several years ago,” Gen. Campbell declared, “that the ammunition program requirements could not be met with the limited sup ply of brass then available. The use ty. Due to the widely different pro perties of brass and steel, severe man ufacturing difficulties were anticipat ed. Nevertheless, through the inter est, cooperation and determination of the technicians and production men of American industry, the venture prov ed a success. Millions of acceptable steel cases were produced, the ammu nition program was met, and thou sands of tons of then critical brass were released by Ordnance for the manufacture of other more urgently needed war matrial. “Some few weeks ago. however, a revision to the Army Supply Program was received by the Ordnance De partment calling for a greatly reduced number of rounds of small arms am munition. This reduction was caused by the fact that small arms ammuni tion reserves in the battle areas and at home have been built up to a safe level. “The reduction in the manufacture of small arms ammunition thus made available a large tonnage of cartridge brass for artillery cases and obviated the necessity for consideration of steel in either small arms ammunition or artillery cases. The brass made available has been assigned to the manufacture of artillery cases. “Steel cases cost more than brass cases, require a greater number of manufacturing operations, and yield high scrap losses. Since the inherent corrosion resistance of steel is less than brass, steel cases are not as well suited as brass cases for use in humid tropical climates and are more likely to result in long-time storage compli cations. “All of the technical data which has been accumulated by industry in all its phases in the development of the steel cartridge case is being carefully documented and preserved so that if again a brass shortage should occur for artillery or small arms ammuni tion cases, Ordnance can rapidly go agian into steel.” ARE YOU CONCERNED? Hermiston Dairy Great increases in the number of game throughout the country caused many states to liberalize their game laws this year, the Council of State Governments reports. Longer hunting seasons are now permitted, killing of does and other species which have been protected in the past is now authorized in sev- eral states and various other strictive provisions have been laxed. States are taking this action for several reasons. Complaints are ing made in agricultural areas that damage to crops and cultivated areas is caused by game. This has been especially true as regards deer and elk in many of the western states, deer in the Great Lakes states and pheasants in Great Lakes and northern Great Plains states. In Wisconsin, where compensation is made for damage by game, deer and bear damage has cost the state between $10,000 and $15,000 annually for the last three or four years. Readaptation of some conserva tion policies to new circumstances also is believed by most states to promote sound conservation and to supplement the domestic meat sup ply. Deer, elk, bear, rabbits, duck and other game furnish America’s tables with about 250,000,000 pounds of meat a year, the council said. YOUR PROTECTION is our JOB! The workers accomplished the previously unheard-of feat of sep arating experimentally the two proc esses of photosynthesis and oxygen production, which plants carry on simultaneously to the confusion of investigators attempting to trace the steps involved. Using algae as the experimental plants, the Wisconsin bacteriologists supplied the cells with benzaldehyde and light, at the same time depriv ing them of carbon dioxide. They proved that under such conditions the cells produced oxygen—along with benzyl alcohol—from the ben zaldehyde, and furthermore that the latter did not serve as a source of carbon dioxide. This study also indicated that photosynthesis can be carried on with neither carbon dioxide nor wa- ter attached to the chlorophyll com plex at the instant light is absorbed. Thus there is some unknown link between the absorption of light energy and its use in photosynthesis. Ladies Wear the Pants Uruguay’s 2.000.000 inhabitants, scattered over a territory of some 72.000 square miles, enjoy one of the most advanced social legisla tions to be found anywhere. The country’s women are no exception, reports a writer for La Ercilla, of Santiago, Chile. The writer calls this country “the women'sparadiseof South America,” and supports his statement by citing the important part played by wom en in industry, agriculture, educa tion, sports, government and de fense work. As a final, crushing proof, he points out that Uruguay is one of the few South American coun tries where women may wear slacks without censure. Not only do women here have the right to vote, but they likewise enjoy all the civic and social rights of men, in the social, political and professional world. Uruguayan wom en are eligible for all elective and appointive offices in federal, provin cial and municipal government, in cluding that of president of the re public. Wash Pillows To wash pillows, first transfer the feathers to a closely woven bag large enough to prevent the feath- ers from packing and tie the top of the bag securely. Wash the bag and the contents in a tub of warm soapy water, gently sousing up and down. Rinse several times in clear warm water and place in the bag on an elevated screen or lattice to permit free circulation of air on all sides. If drying out of doors, do not place in direct sunlight. Shake the feathers frequently during dry ing to prevent packing and to facili tate even drying throughout. When pillows must be dried indoors, it is a good plan to use an electric fan to increase the circulation of air. Wash the ticking the same as any cotton fabric. When the feathers and ticking are thoroughly dry, re place the feathers. WEST S BEST HOUSE PAINT at no extra cost! You’ll agree that, these days, you can’t afford to buy anything but the best. Phone or Pilgrims Friends Another, Indian friend of the Pil grims was Squanto, a Wampanoag. This was one of the outstanding tribes of New England Indians. The principal chief was Massasoit, and, thanks to the good efforts of Samo set and Squanto, he, too, became a good friend of the Pilgrims. On Massasoit's first visit to Ply mouth he was accompanied by 60 warriors, and he and his party were treated to as fine a feast as the limited stores of the Pilgrims could provide. A peace treaty was signed, and Massasoit promised that as long as he lived none of his people would make war on the Pilgrims.
