C. Williams to duty in a field elsewhere. Captain Williams came here almost a year ago to start work on one of the Goverment’s largest defense projects and he leaves it near com pletion with a feeling among all citizens, old and new, of a job well done and a high service rendered. He organized the work from the grass roots in a des ert in a small community with a multitude of prob lems to a basis of à towering achievement. To recite the details would require columns, but we hope that the analysis of his work by his superior officers will redound greatly to his credit and future advance ment in the service of his country. And Pankow has resigned. He says that he wants to get acquainted with his family—the first duty of any man. For years he has been at the beck and call of every citizen in Hermiston, any hour of the 24 of every day. His strength has been sapped, the burden of public service has grown heavy and the reasonable attentions to himself and family have been impaired. Who can blame him for his decision. Such is too often the case with a public servant. A free horse is too of ten ridden to death. The people call but often fail to appreciate. The taxpayer growls and is too often un willing to pay the bill. This community has grown and he has grown with it, but at too great a cost. We hope that in any new work he may undertake that there will be greater ease and greater opportunity to exercise the qualities within him and that he and his estimable family may be permitted to enjoy the pleasures of life and attain more deserved success. We can only talk about the weather, but this new brand of autumn freakish changes we can do noth ing about. The wind and rain of the last several we can insist to our many visitors are out of order September and October have been perfect o long that ' must apologize for this “unus- he workmen at th ordnance depot and to the far r with his crops. But we have no control oyer the action of 0 an, mountains and sun spots or whatever forces t iat have combined to create this new orde r. Nor do we venture whether it portends a soft or hard winter. -«S’ z THURSDAY, OCTOBER 9, 1941 HERMISTON HERALD HERMISTON, OREGON.
