Dr. Malcolm T. M acE aehern, di rector of the A m erican College of Surgeons, pointed this out recently. "T he reason for th is," said Dr. M acE aehern, “ is the close relation ship between nursing and hospital adm inistration. Nurse executives a re concerned with the problem s < f hospital adm inistration and thus are prepared for tfae duties of hospital m an ag em en t.” The high percentage of women m the profession, believes Miss Nellie G Brown, superintendent of Ball M emorial hospital, Muncie, Ind , the fam ed ‘M iddletow n," is due to women who sta rted as head nurses in the sm all hospitals, which tot. 1 7,i per cent of the natio n 's general hospitals. A “ sm a ll” hospital is one which bus fewer than 100 beds “Often, a superintendent of oi.c U the sm aller hospitals is simply a head nurse with som e idea of menu m aking. X-ray and the workings o: the lab o rato ry ," said Miss Brown “ In tim e, the sm all place becomes larger. Her own abilities increase and she finds herself an im p o rta r’ ad m in istrato r of a thriving hos p ital."
