McKenzie called upon citizens of this city to cooperate in the cam paign to keep Oregon a t the top of the list in tra ffic safety by driving and walking carefully during the rem ainder of the year. In a statem ent calling attention to the recent announcement th a t Oregon had won firs t place in the National Safety council’s 1940 tra ffic safety contest in the w estern division, May or McKenzie stressed the fact th a t this state already had made a good s ta rt tow ard a favorable record for 1941 by leading the nation i l l tra ffic fatality reduction during the first two months of the year. “In this modern era of automobile travel, the reputation of being a safe area in which to drive is of inesti- mateable value in attractin g tourists to our state, “the mayor declared in his statem ent. “ In addition to the high distinction conferred upon the state by winning the contest, there is a tangible value involved in being recognized as the safest state in the west. But during this same period tra ffic fatalities decreased 49 per cent. Clearly, the mere fact there is a g reat volume of tra ffic on our highways and streets does not mean there m ust be a correspondingly g reat volume of traffic fatalities. “If we, as individual drivers, will hold down our speed on the highways, approach intersections with g reater caution, always remember to give proper hand and arm signals and to observe the rights of others, we can prevent accidents, as pedestrians, we ran cross streets only a t intersections where we can use crosswalks, watch for approaching traffic before leav ing the curb, walk to the left of the highway, facing tra ffic , and w ear something white at night. "In this way, we can avoid becom ing involved in tra ffic accidents and each one of us can thus do his p art in m aintaining the sta te’s reputation as a safe place in which to drive and walk.” OUR DEMOCRACY---- —-by Mai s RECORD of INDIVIDUAL T H R IF T MERlCA HAS A BACKBONE OF THRIFT.
