Next Tuesday, May 30, it is a goodly and proper thing for those living and able to mark this remembrance with sweet flowers. As a people, we are not very emotional, and if there is any way in which we can bring our kindness to the surface, it should be done, and so the encouragement of the day sacred to the memory of those who have gone before is worthy of much consideration. Decoration Day must essentially be one entirely free from any feeling but that of generosity and loving kindness. It is a beautiful idea—this one of decorating the graves of all the soldiers, but how much better it would be to carry the custom even further, and not have even one grave in the cemetery overlooked. The U m atilla Garden club held Its first flower show in th e com m unity hail Saturday afternoon. A lovely display of roses were the main fea ture. Mrs. John W u rster won the sweepstakes prize. A short program was given and a tea was served. Mr. and Mrs. Raymond McNabb and daughter Deana spent last Tues day evening in Pendleton. Mr. and Mrs. Ursel H iatt have as th eir guest his m other, Mrs. H iatt of Pendleton. Mr and Mrs. Carl Brownell of Portland visited at the home of th eir dau g h ter and family, Mr. and Mrs. Irw in Chapman, while they attended the g rad u atin g exercises for th eir daughter, Naomi Brownell. The high school held th e ir annual picnic a t Bingham Springs Friday. Thomas S lattery took them up in his truck. Mr. and Mrs. Norman W orthley left Friday m orning for P ortland where they will be at th e home of her parents this summer. Hugh Van Scholark drove Miss Sara Rix to Portland over th e week end where she visited h er sister and he visited his mother. Mr. and Mrs. Andy Baldwin and Mr. and Mrs. Harold Buhm an of H eppner spent Sunday visitin g at th e Ursel H iatt home. Mr. and Mrs. Je rry Sm ith and son have moved into the W orthley house for th is summer. Veta Moran and Robert Brownell, who are atten d in g K lnm an's Busi ness U niversity in Spokane spent th e last week at the home of th eir raren ts. Coryells. Mrs. Skelten of Leavenw orth, Wn. visited her sister. Mrs. Bessie Wis dom last week, leaving again Mon day. The commencement exercises held a t the high school F riday evening was attended by a large crowd. Dr. Elmo Stevens of La G rande gave a very Interesting address. The high school graduates were Ju n e Stevens, R obert Brace, Mary Acockf Clarence Fredrickson, Irvin W hipple and John Swearengen. The entire teaching staff will retu rn next year w ith the exception of Mias Boling, who has accepted a position near her home In P o rtlan d , and Miss Clarke, who has also resigned for a position nearer her home. Mrs. Ollie Coryell left by bus for The Dalles Monday for a few days stay w ith her sister. Miss Boling left for P o rtlan d F ri day and Miss Clarke w ent to Eugene the same day. Miss D usenberry has gone to her home a t W eiser, Idaho. Mr. and Mrs. Lyle Eddy left for Sandpoint. Idaho^ F riday evening. Edw ard Shaw, who was called to his home in Colorado, because of the critical condition of his father, re turned home T hursday of last week.
