H e described a breeding p ro ject sta rte d th is past y ear a t th e b ran ch a t H erm iston w here a sy stem atic attem p t is being m ade to develop an e a rlie r m a tu r ing stra in of turkeys. P o u ltry breed in g w ork has shown th a t early fe a th e rin g is a c h a ra c te r istic easily tra n sm itte d by in h e ri ta n ce and as th is is closely linked w ith early m a tu rity and m a rk e t a b ility it is believed th a t such desir able c h a ra c te ristic s can be in creas ed th ro u g h selective breeding, K now lton explained. B reeding work in tu rk ey s has lagged far behind th a t w ith chickens. Any feeding th a t is done w ith tu rk ey s a fte r ab o u t 5 % or 6 m onths ¡3 h ighly in efficien t in r a te of gain, Noel L. B ennlon, extension special ist, showed in c itin g resu lts of re search here and elsew here. In one N evada ex p rim en t it was shown th a t w hile th e average ra te of gain w as 4.3 4 pounds of feed to one pound of gain th ro u g h o u t th e grow ing period, it took 10.73 pounds of feed for each pound of gain d u rin g the seventh m onth of feeding. Feed costs a re reduced some 25 per cent w here tu rk ey s have free ran g e on a lfa lfa or sim ilar green feed, Bennion added. He also urged the sep aratio n of hens and tom s be fore tlje fin ish in g season and th e m a rk e tin g of th e hens before the toms, as they m a tu re earlier.
