On th e m el low m oist soils corn should be p lan ted no over two inches deep. On th e coarser sandy soil, from tw o to th re e inches deep. T he soil should be irrig ate d be fore p la n tin g . Corn p lan ted in f u r rows should be irrig a te d several tim es before th e fu rro w s are fillet! level w ith the rest of th e land. A good sta n d of corn u su ally m eans a good yield: no field fu ll of m issing or v acan t h ills can produce well. Avoid p la n tin g w hen too cold or w et; have seed bed properly p re pared ; use good seed and do not p la n t too deep, especially in th e fin er soil types. I t is u su ally safe to p la n t a t least 25 per cen t more seed th a n you w ant, as th is insures a full num ber to th e acre. U sually eig h t to tw elve pounds of seed per acre is enough. H arro w in g a fte r p la n tin g , so as to k ill weeds, is a good practice. T his should be done d u rin g th e m id dle of the day w hen th e dew is off and when th e p la n ts a re d ry and less b rittle. C u ltiv atio n should be gin w hen th e p lan ts are ab o u t four inches high.
