RECOMMEND CORN
ACREAGEJNCREASE
(C ontinued from P age 1)
from corn ear w orm in festatio n .
All seed corn should be tested to
assu re stro n g g erm in atio n . Corn
on weedy land should be check-
rowed so th a t it may be cu ltiv ated
both ways. It should also be p la n t
ed th re e sta lk s to each hill. D rilled
corn can be slig h tly th ic k er. U su
ally one foot to 18 inches a p a rt in
rows th ree feet w ide is recom m end
ed. M any people bury th e ir corn
ra th e r th a n p la n t it. On th e m el
low m oist soils corn should be
p lan ted no over two inches deep. On
th e coarser sandy soil, from tw o to
th re e inches deep.
T he soil should be irrig ate d be
fore p la n tin g . Corn p lan ted in f u r

level w ith the rest of th e land. Af
te r it is a foot to 18 inches h ig h ,
th e fu rro w s can be made in th e cen
te r of th e rows for irrig a tio n .
A good sta n d of corn u su ally
m eans a good yield: no field fu ll of
m issing or v acan t h ills can produce
well. Avoid p la n tin g w hen too cold
or w et; have seed bed properly p re
pared ; use good seed and do not
p la n t too deep, especially in th e
fin er soil types.
I t is u su ally safe to p la n t a t least
25 per cen t more seed th a n you
w ant, as th is insures a full num ber
to th e acre. U sually eig h t to tw elve
pounds of seed per acre is enough.
H arro w in g a fte r p la n tin g , so as
to k ill weeds, is a good practice.
T his should be done d u rin g th e m id
dle of the day w hen th e dew is off
and when th e p la n ts a re d ry and
less b rittle. C u ltiv atio n should be
gin w hen th e p lan ts are ab o u t four
inches high.
F irst cu ltiv a tio n can
be done fairly close to th e p lan ts
