Then, too, it was pointed out, the p u rs u it planes are p a rtic u la rly v a l uable in harassing concentrations of troops on the ground by d e m o ra liz ing them w ith m achine-gun fire. A rm y officers here said the les sons of the Spanish w a r a lre a d y are being p u t to use in th is co u n try, w ith the a rm y h a vin g placed o r d ers fo r w h a t w ere described here as the "fa s te s t p u rs u it planes in the w o rld .” E ig h ty -fiv e o f these little fighters a lre a d y are under co nstruction at the S eversky A ir c r a ft corp o ra tion in the E ast, it was said. Then, too, the a rm y , according to officers here, has developed w h a t is know n in m ilita r y c irc le s as the X F M -1. T h is plane, the officers say, is capable o f "o v e rh a u lin g any a ir ta rg e t thus fa r co n stru cte d .” T h is new X FM -1 c a rrie s a crew o f five men. Is operated by pusher ra th e r than tra c to r p ro pellors—a decided in novation in m odern fig h t ing planes. T h is plane, the top speed o f w hich is a secret, is capable of fig h tin g at an a ltitu d e of 30,000 feet o r m ore. A t least five, and possibly m ore, h e a vy-ca lib e r m achine-guns are m ounted on th is c ra ft, it is said. Humming Bird Halts Tunnel Construction Los Angeles.—The little D utch boy who saved H olland fro m sea inundation by s tic k in g his finger in a leak in the d ike has been m atched here by a h u m m in g b ird w hich has delayed the construc tion of an essential tunnel in the new m e tro p o lita n w a te r d is tric t p ro je ct. The hu m m in g b ird b u ilt its nest on the knot o f a guy rope used in the tunnel co n stru ctio n and s ta rt ed in to raise a fa m ily o f h um m ers. W ork was ordered delayed on that p a rt of the p ro je c t u n til m other h u m m in g b ird had hatched her brood.
