DRESS GOODS LABELS NEED SCANNING W hen it comes to buying clo th in g an d y ard goods, how ever, th e consu m er is still p retty much a t th e m er cy of th e m an u fa ctu re r, especially if she does not fu lly u n d ersta n d th e m ean in g of th e trad e term s used, Miss P erd u e points out. F or in stance, th e term s " s h ru n k ” and “ p re -sh ru n k ” , w hich are used a g rea t deal in th e d ry goods business, are vague and m isleading, because they have no d e fin ite m eaning, and th e goods may o r may not sh rin k w hen w ashed in th e usual way. M aterials or g arm en ts b ea rin g th e labels “ com pletely s h ru n k ,” “ w ill not s h rin k ,” or “ fully s h ru n k ,” how ever, can be expected to do very little sh rin k in g . Cottons b earin g th e label "san fo rized ,” can be de pended upon to sh rin k n ot more th a n on e-fo u rth inch per yard, w hich is a neg lig ib le am ount, Miss P erd u e says. T he m a tte r of color fastn ess has been a problem in both ready-to- w ear and in y ardage, she says. “ F ast color” labels m ean little , and n o th ing can be done if th e color does fade. She su g g ests th a t a really helpful label would be one sta tin g th a t th e m a te ria l is “ fast color from w ater, w eath er, b o ilin g or p e rsp ira tio n .” Some fab rics now bear th e N afel label issued by th e N atio n al A ssociation of F in ish e rs of T ex tile F abrics, w hich in d icates th a t th e m a terial has been tested and found to conform to th e asso ciatio n 's sta n d a rd s for fast color to lig h t and w ashing. In b u y in g silk th e term “ pure- dye” does not refer to th e p u rity of th e dye used nor to th e p u rity of th e silk, b u t r a th e r to th e am ount of w eig h tin g in th e m a terial. A silk may bear th is label if it con ta in s n o t more th a n 10 per cent m etallic w eig h tin g for all colors ex cept black, w hich may co n tain as m uch as 15 per cent. T h e term “p u re silk ” does not m ean th e sam e as "p u re-d y e” silk, a lth o u g h some m a n u fa ctu re rs use it w ith th is m eaning. G enerally, how ever, the term "p u re silk ” has no d efin ite m eaning, Miss P erd u e says.
