T w enty men w alked in on him ito pay th e ir re spects on th e ev en t of his re tire m ent from m any y ears of service as ru ra l c a rrie r on H erm iston mail routes. H is hobby is fish in g and they presented him w ith a sp lit ban- boo fish in g rod and reel. F or 21 y ears an d n in e m onths Reeves served as m ail c a rrie r, b egin n ing w hen th e firs t ro u te w as es tablished. He sta rte d w ith an old team of horses and open buggy and in th e follow ing w in te r secured a closed mail w agon an d th ree m ules w hich he a lte rn a te d on th e route, giving each m ule a day ’s rest, in tu rn , from th e heavy d rag over new sandy roads. A y ea r la te r he b ought a model T F ord pick-up, and in ’29 a model A; la te r he purchased a V-8, u sin g a to ta l of nine cars in th e service. The period d u rin g w hich he cover ed th e ro u te w as an average of 302 days a year, or a to ta l of 656S days. T he average d istan ce he estim ates a t ab o u t 40 m iles a trip , m ak in g a to ta l d ista n c e covered of ap p ro x i m ately 262,640 miles. H e k ep t no record of days off b u t estim ated th a t a su b s titu te carried th e ro u te only ten days each year. Because of th is long, continuous service, u n d er th e rules of th e pos tal d ep artm en t, he is p erm itted to re tire w ith a com fortable pension for th e rem a in d er of his life.
