& VOLUM* «r NUMBEB 46 1937 MARKS SILVER JUBILEE PROJECT FAIR NEW DAIRY CLASSIFICATION T h is year m arks th e silver a n n i versary of th e w est U m atilla P roject fa ir w hich will be staged S eptem b e r '2-3-4. S u b stan tial increases in prem ium money has been made in th e crops and d airy division and m inor changes in o th e r divisions. A to ta l of 3200 has been added to the prem ium s in th e crops division and th e d iffe ren t granges have been ask ed to m ake up exhibits from th e ir m em bers w hich should en larg e the m ajo rity displays. Special prem ium money is listed tor individual farm ex h ib its and they w ill not com pete w ith th e granges. A special ex h ib it is being prepared by the U m atilla E x p erim en t S tation on p astu re g ras ses. T his exhibit w ill not com pete for prizes, b u t w ill add to th e edu c a tio n a l fea tu re of the project fair. A new classification has been a- dopted for th e first tim e in th e dairy c a ttle division. E ig h t herd classifi cations have been added to the p re m ium list, w hich should be an a t tra c tio n to the breeders as w ell as add to th e num ber of anim als exhib ited a t th e fair. The prem ium clas sification has been changed from a th re e money show to a six money show , w hich o ffers some inducem ent to all breeders who ex h ib it a t the fa ir. T his provides n in e ty d iffe ren t lot en tries for d airy c a ttle alone, and th ir ty for each of the th ree breeds Jerseys, H olstein and G uern sey. It w ill also encourage the show ing of younger anim als w hich w ill ten d to develop b e tte r show a n i m als In th e fu tu re . In th e dairy cow classes, a ten percent increase has been added to each prem ium for those h aving production records. These records can e ith e r be made u n d er D airy H erd Im provem ent as sociation te stin g (stan d a rd p la n ) or official records recognized by the vario u s breed associations. G asoline for tra n sp o rta tio n of all c a ttle h as been provided by th e d if feren t garages and service sta tio n s serving th is com m unity. The gaso line is being d istrib u ted to h aulers and tru c k e rs on the basis of one g a l lon per head of ca ttle bro u g h t to the fair. Two divisions are included in th e horse departm en t, m aking up five classes to b e shown. T here has been a change in the p o u ltry d ep artm en t, dividing the classificatio n s into th ree d istin ct classes. T here are fifteen lot en tries m aking it possible for th e breeders to show fourteen d iffe ren t breeds of chickens instead of th e custom ary th re e in th e past. No su b sta n tia l change w as m ade in the turkey clas- sifica"tion, except an additio n al th ird prem ium money is offered. No changes have been m ade in th e w om en's d ep a rtm en t from pre vious years. Two ad d itio n al lot entries were m ade in th e flow er division. A to tal of 316 in prem ium money has been allo tted for the school display w hich w ill be divided betw een schools a c cording to th e ju d g e’s decision. It was th o u g h t best to handle it in th is m an n er ra th e r th a n to m ake up d if fe re n t classifications. No su b sta n tia l increases have been m ade in the home economies division of the 4-H club d epartm ent. M inor changes w ere m ade in 4-H livestock division in keeping w ith th e changes m ade in th e open clas ses. T hree special prizes have been added to th e livestock division. Jo h n Solum, mem ber of th e Rose C ity Motorcycle club, suffered a broken collar bone in a spill on th e TT course, and Mrs. Wm. Fredreckson was in ju red in a car accid en t on Monday. T he m otorcycle field meet was ev ery th in g th e com m ittee on ar- rangem en ts said it would be, and was som ething new in th is d istric t. Members of m otorcycle clubs from P o rtlan d . W alla W alla, LaG rande and Y akim a p articip ated in th e events m ak in g a to tal of 7 6 m otor cycles. Em il K reossky of th e Rose City Motorcycle club won first in the TT race an d “ M aniac” W esterg u ard came in second. The F ly in g 15 club of P o rtlan d won first in the relay race w ith th e Rose City club second. "R ed ” D ahlberg was firs t and Gus Callus was second in th e Aus tra lia n p u rsu it race. Bob "S uicide” Dillon of th e Rose City club made a record broad Jump. Geo. New- m ann of the Rose City club won th e cave man soccer contest. Bob D illon acted as the pivot man in the tric k rid in g events w hich were am ong the best and were said to be orig in al. Roy F oxten lead the drill team in an exhibition, and Joe W ilson of th e A m erican M otorcycle association, acted as referee. Bob D illon crashed th ro u g h a ten foot hig h b u rn in g board w all and Gus Callus rode th ro u g h a b u rn in g canvas tu n n e l, w hich was sa tu ra te d w ith gasoline. These fea tu re s fu r nished th e m ost th rills in th e show. The new Y eager’s Bakery w ill be ready for operation some tim e th e first of next week if ail goes well w ith the in stallatio n of m achinery and equipm ent. J. H. Y eager is p u t tin g in a *5000 p lan t w ith a coal Stocker fu rn ae'- heat for th e oven, and all m odern equipm ent. T he b u ild in g on th e corner of Main and Second has been en tirely rem odelled in to a spacious room. She was atten d ed by Miss M argaret K irk of P endleton, who wore a gown of yellow' organdy and a cor sage of g ardenias. Melvin Moyer, b ro th er of the groom, acted as best man. ONE OF OLDEST IN OREGON PASSES LOLA HALL, 98, W ILL BE BURIEDSATURDAY Mrs. Lola S. H all, one of th e o ld est resident in Oregon, passed aw ay early T hursday m orning a t th e age of 98 years. Mrs. H all was a wom an of wide acq u ain tan ce, h av in g come to Oregon from P en n sy lv an ia in 1905. She received many g reetin g s from frien d s and rela tiv e s on her b irth d ay each year w hich was F eb ru ary 22nd, Last F eb ru ary she received 51 g reetin g s from elev en d ifferen t states. F u n eral cervices will be held from P ra n n ’s F u n eral P arlo rs S a t u rd ay afternoon a t 4:00 o’clock, w ith Rev. R. R. F in k b ein er o ffic ia t ing. H er mind was clear and she portray ed a sense of hum or on all occasions. Mrs. H all often spoke of her b irth place on the shores of Lake C hau tau q u a, In New York state. A g rea ter p a rt of Mrs. H all's e a r ly life was spent in Union City, P ennsylvania, w here she lived w ith her fam ily u n til 1905, a fte r she m arried Daniel A. H all In 1863, He died In H erm iston th e year 1915, To th is union th ree ch ild ren w ere born, H a rrie t E sther H all, w ho passed aw ay in 1920, and C lara G. H all of H erm iston and G. Leroy H all of Mc M innville, who survive. The la tte r is now in R ochester, N. Y., and it w ill be impossible for him to be here for the funeral. Mrs. H all had been a membor of th e B aptist church since girlhood, and was ever d ilig en t in h er work, ta k in g an active in terest.
