Local Happenings Mrs. L. C. Dyer and Mrs. L. W. Douglas motored to Walla Walla Saturday. John Schmidt of the Umatilla Meadows was a Hermiston visitor Saturday. Walt and "Babe” Nation went to Pendleton on business Monday. Miss Alice Dunn was a week end guest at the Carl Brown home. Mrs. Harry Connor returned Tues day evening from Vale, Ore., where she has been visiting relatives for the past two weeks. Frederickson and two daughters of Salem, Ore., visited over the week end at the home of his sister-in-law and family, Mr. and Mrs. R. B. Wilcox. They also visited Sunday with Frank Fred erickson of Irrigon, and Lewis Fred erickson of Heppner who met their brother here at the Wilcox home. The Fredericksons were enroute to Lewiston. Idaho, on a short visit and will again stop in Hermiston on their return trip. Nation and her me er, Mrs. S. L. D. Ross of Yakii Wn., who has been visiting here past month, left Sunday for Ya ma where Mrs. Nation will visit mother and her daughter, Mrs. Ackley, for the next ten days. Among the group of Hermis Legionnaires who attended the r ular meeting of the Heppner P Monday night were James Todd, < trict commander, O. K. Mudge, J. Piersol, Alfred Cable and Guy Ai berry. Don Serell, who has attended University of Oregon at Eugene, the past two years, returned ho last week to spend the summer w his parents, Mr. and Mrs. John ell. Miss Ruth Dodd returned Thursday afternoon from a weeks’ trip with her uncle, H. Collins and daughter Catheryn, California. They visited in ! Contract bridgi was enjoyed by the guests and prize: were won by Mrs. R. A. Brownsor and the honoree, Miss Henderson, Mrs. D. W. Fleming, aunt of Mist Emogene Paul, died at Seattle. Wn. Tuesday. June 16th. following a long illness. She was with her par ents. Mr. and Mrs. Edward Gould at the time of her death and her husband was at her bedside. The Flemings make their home at Bend and had visited friends and relatives in Hermiston at different times. Mrs. C. D. Ellis entertained at two bridge dessert luncheons Thurs day of last week and Tuesday of this week at her home on Hermiston avenue. Roses were used to bright en the tables. The occasion was in celebration of the birthdays of Clark Paul and Law rence Swarner. Clark left Monday for Astoria where he will be part of the Coast Guard encampment for the next two weeks. Mr. and Mrs. Dewey Payne, for mer residents of Hermiston, and brother to H. L. Payne and Oscar Payne, known in Hermiston, are the parents of twins born June 11th at Centralia. Wn. The twins will have different birthdays, the girl, weigh ing 31 pounds, arrived before mid- night. and the boy, who tipped the scale» at four pounds, after 12:00 o’clock The Paynes will be remem bered by many here, and Oscar Payne now lives at Brownsville, Ore. •vvv*****9 37 will be held at the next meeting on June 25. Poppies were sold on the streets by local youngsters and prizes were awarded to those selling the most poppies. First prize was won by Molly Anne Ripley; second prize going to Allan Hiatt of Uma tilla. The first regular business meet ing of the month was held Thurs day, June 11.
