Always alert to the interests of the people he served, his popularity had spread far beyond his personal acquaintances—until the mere men tion of his name commanded a deep respect—a respect for a public ser- vant who had kept faith with him- self. Hei Hoss had fought a losing bat- tie against a deadly malady for years but had never given up his work, and never had It suffered be cause of neglect. His last official act, under date of February 2, was the issuance of a press statement in which he accounted for funds re ceived from the federal gasoline fuel tax.
