Oregon citizens who knew Hal E.
Hoss either as a public official,
newspaper man or friend, cannot
help but know that his great public
popularity was merit' <1 by his per-
sonality and genuine liking for
mankind.
Always alert to the interests of
the people he served, his popularity
had spread far beyond his personal
acquaintances—until the mere men
tion of his name commanded a deep
respect—a respect for a public ser-
vant who had kept faith with him-
self.
Hei Hoss had fought a losing bat-
tie against a deadly malady for
years but had never given up his
work, and never had It suffered be
cause of neglect. His last official
act, under date of February 2, was
the issuance of a press statement in
which he accounted for funds re
ceived from the federal gasoline fuel
tax. A life of service closed before
it was half finished—but Oregon
citizens are proud to say that he
was ours.
