That process of degeneration must be stopped at any sacrifice of perfec tion in the tax system. The senate responded promptly to the presi dent’s summons to action. The house will give better service to the nation by passing the senate bill unamend ed than it would by spending time on the effort to cure its imperfect ions. Then only half the work of bal ancing the budget will have been done. The other half is reduction in cost of government by enactment of the economy bill. The house failed utterly to rise to the occasion. 1 he senate committee has drawn a bill which cuts $300,000,000 from an nual expenditures. Doubtless many senators see defects in it. but if they begin offering amendments, more time will be wasted and the process of degeneration and stagnation will continue. As the president said: "Time is of the essence’,’ and both enate and house would better pass the bill without change than spend time on the vain effort to perfect it. If the economy bill should fall short of its goal, more taxes must be ad ded to the tax bill in order to make rood the shortage. If time should he wasted on changing provisions of the bill, the same time will shrink the source of taxation, and more taxes will be needed to make good •he shrinkage.— The Oregonian. Spurred on by the personal appeal of President Hoover, the senate has finally passed a tax bill which may fairly be described as the best It could do under the circumstances. It is an ags regation of compromises. Faced with the duty of imposing a new burden of new taxes unpreced ented in peacetime, the senate en deavored to levy taxes which would antagonize the fewest people. That explains defeat of tht manufac turers' sales tax. Being spread over the whole population, it would have yielded the most revenue by the smallest exaction from each citizen, CHURCH NOTES but the breadth of its base made it apply to so large a number of peo ple that it aroused widespread oppo >********* BAPTIST-CHRISTIAN CHURCH sition, which accomplished its de Wallace Jones.
