Beck, form er solicitor gen eral of the United States, in his stan d ard work on “The Constitution of th e United States, Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow.” Mr Beck quotes Franklin as asking his colleagues in the convention, “Do we Imagine th at we no longer need his assistance?" And Franklin pronounced this conviction; “T hat God governs In the affairs of men. And If a spar row cannot fall to the ground w ith out his notice, is It prpbable th at an empire can rise w ithout his aid?” Franklin urged th at “henceforth prayers Imploring the assistance of heaven, and its blessings on our de liberations, be held in this assembly every morning, before we proceed to business.” An “Impious” speech by Alexander Hamilton Is also referred to by Mr. Beck, on the authority o f Jonathan Dayton, the youngest member of the convention. He records th at Hamilton “was confidently of opinion th at they were competent to tran sact the busi ness which had been intrusted to, th eir care—th at they were equal to every exigency which might occur, and con cluded by saying, th at therefore he did not see the necessity of calling in for eign aid.” W ashington' fixed his eye on Hamilton with a m ixture of su r prise and indignation while he uttered th is im pertinent and impious speech. —W ashington Star. m other, Mrs. T hom pson, Monday a f of “ The S poilers,” com ing PINE CITY NEWS PAGE THREE to the w ill be th e n in th county to tak e p a rt to give every d airy m an in th e county ♦ ternoon. W. A. W ilk in so n , A ctin g R eg ister. (J a n . 22-Feb. 29) to W isest o f M onarchs Do you sometimes wonder how it ever happened th at clothes became standardized? Why is it, for in stance, th at when you are looking for your wife or flnncee, or any other cer tain specified woman, amongst a crowd in a departm ent store, or hotel lobby, or a t the station, and you feel sure you can recognize her anywhere by a glimpse of her hat, you become hope lessly confused over the bevy of hats around you, every one of which you would sw ear was the very identical h at your fair lady was accustomed to w ear? H ere’s how it came about. Solomon, th a t intrepid husband of a thousand women, was out walking one fine spring day with a certain favored wife of his, one of the cuddly, teasing, coax ing variety, with such a vivid person ality th at he could even remember her name. When they read ied the business sec tion, and were strolling past a milli nery sliop, the petite one went into raptures over a little beige felt hat on display in the window. “Oh, I must have th a t darling hat, Solly dear. Isn’t It adorable?” And she gave his arm an affectionate squeeze. ‘‘You’ll buy it fo r me, won’t yon, dearie? All the neighbors will envy me. Ju st imagine how stunning it will look! I wa-a-nt i t ” Of course they bought the hat and the little favored wife wore it home. The next morning a disheveled, downcast, pitiable wreck of a once- powerful man, who looked as though he had had a thousand stormy inter views, hobbled into the millinery shop, holding In his trem bling hands a tiny beige felt hat, and thundered, “I w ant to place an order for 999 hats exactly like this one.” And so it wns th a t mass production had its beginning.—K ansas City Star. ♦ ■ « - t v T “ '■*' • "*■• Alfred W.
