The world likes a game as well as any one. Ro the world, or earth, goes spinning Every day It makes a complete spin and It spins right around on me. "Think of the earth spinning, and think of me as the line going right through the center of the top of the earth upon which It Is spinning.“ “It's no small thought to think of the earth spinning,” David said. It was tbe truth, too, he thought, and M . ,lr o he felt that “ >*• would Mrs. Laura Todd attended the please Axis, oore fam ily reunion in W alla W a lla “You’re right, boy, you're Axis snld. Just as people get Into the habit of sleep ing on one side and never changing So the earth always turns from the west to tbe east and never change» this habit. “AH the morning It would turn you toward the sun. at noon you would pnss the sun (you could bid It good- noon If you wished) and In the after noon turn you away from It.” “That’s why the sun rises In the east and sets In the west," David ex claimed. "Good boy. go to the head of the class,” said Axis. David didn't like that so much. This Living Map wasn't like a class. But evidently Axis didn't mean anything by It for he continued, in so friendly * way. “It's the earth, you know, that moves and makes day and night—not the sun." “I ’ve never felt It moving," David said. Just ns I might move In a circle all around something that hnd fallen on tbe floor, though at the same time making my own little spin. The path way of the earth is called the orbit— you would call It something fine like that too I f you loved a favorite walk or path as we lore ours. “And my dear David, In some pnrts bf the earth's orbit the lands thnt are north of your old friend Equator lean slightly toward the sun and so have spring and summer while the rest leaning away from the sun have au tumn and winter.” "You seem to lean a little, Axis. Don’t you stand up straight, either?" " I like to lean a b it They often cal! me the Leaning Axis. My parents never minded. They never said to me, " ‘Axl- keep ynur shoulders back. You dou't want to be round-shout- i derad.' They never snld that to me." “That seems funny.” David mur mured. ) “I suppose It does to you," agreed Axis, "but not to me. Anyway Tva given yon enough of a spinning con versation and I must be back at the game. I have to see to It that day I plays fa ir and that night playa fair, I and It’s almost time for night and tbe I pageant You’re golngl" s "PageantT" asked David. “I didn’t I know about I t " I "oh, yew there’s going to ba a pag- I eant.
