A GRAND RAPIDS ATHLETE From Grand Rapids, Mich, comes the story of a woman who learned to swim after she was 65 years old. At 74 she Is learning to row, and thinks nothing of walking 10 miles and the getting dinner while her companions sit down to rest. The remarkable part of the story is that for the greater part of her life the active young lady in ques tion was engaged in plain, old-fash- toned housework, including a week ly session at the wash tub. She had no time for athletic training or similar diversions. But when she found herself free to play she wasted no time in saying she was too old to learn. She went ahead and learn ed, and she enjoys the fun as much as her children and grandchildren. The people who begin to look for soft chatrg at 40, and stop dancing, swimming und all other healthful exercises at 50 because they are too old for such strenuous activities, and are gouty old bores at 60, with death Just around the corner, should read the Grand Rapids news and limber up. A Blow to Pugilism A sport critic says that Siki's vie tory over Carpentier will be ‘‘a heavy blow to pugilism in Europe.” It may be a blow to pugilism in America, too. The holding of the title a few years ago by Jack Johnson nearly gavo pugll’s ni a black eye in this country— not necessarily because of the champion's color, but because of the low ideals that happened to go with It. SikI, though he speaks French, is a plain African from Af rica, apparently a Senegalese out of the jungle, of the sort used In the French army and so violently object ed to by the Germans. There is no denying the fistic abil ity of a man like Slki. If he follows tip his recent victory with others, in England or America, and thereby proves that his defeat of Carpentier waH no lucky accident, he will have to be recognised as a top-notcher— "the best of his class.” But the ef fect will be in lower mankind's esti mate of the class. And that is Just as well. When a virtual savuge beats a white man with Ills fists, that proves Just one thing—that lie Is a better man with hts fists. Anti that has never been regarded as a very lofty Ideal except among men of the jungle type. It I b Just as well to elim inate Jungle ideals from civilized life Human progress depends on some thing else than ability to punch, kick or bite an antagonist until he gives up. From now on, we may leave that sort of thing to the animals. So much for “pugilism.” w-hlch means prize fighting. Boxing Is eometh'ng else. Properly conducted, It becomes a respectable sport, like fencing, which developed from bloody sword fighting. It is a wholesome exercise, developing ability, strength und fearlessness and therefore use ful to civilized man. THE WAY WE FEEL A prominent business authority re marks that “business activity in this country is very largely dependent on the way people feel.” That is quite true, and It i8 an ill uminating commentary on present conditions. Amerean business in recent months has been pretty good, and Improving pretty steadily, in spite of conditions that on the face of them seemed to mako Improvement impossible. Ord inarily the coal and railroad strikes the political and economic troubles In Europe, the slump In export trade, etc., would have bad a very depress ing effect on enterprise. But con struction, manufacture, investment and employment kept right on grow. Ing. This condition still continues, in the face of the European crllas precipiated by the Turks. It Is an exemplification of the old truth, "as a man tblnketh In bis heart, so is he.** Likewise a nation. And here Is the key to the famous re mark made by the elder Morgan, that anybody who would be “a bear on the United States of America” was a fool. The American people are full of energy and normally optimistic. Their periods of optimism are longer and strouger than their periods of pessmism. After a recent gloom bath, tfcey have turned cheerful again, Their cheerfulness has liberated their energies as usual, and nothing of an untoward nature, at home or abroad, can dampen their ardor or stop their progress while this mood i to on them.
