Thia means th a t the recommendations pf the U m atilla county taxpayers’ league will not be accepted and th a t the proposed tax cu t w ill not be made. The levy for sta te and county p u r poses was 15.5 mills last year and will be 17 mills next year. The in crease Is partly for sta te purposes and partly for the Til Taylor m urder re ward. The county is paying a lot of mon ey in taxes and the burden Is very heavy to all. Some have believed it necessary to reduce th a t burden even a t the expenie of doing aw ay w ith some of the useful activities of the county governm ent. O thers Insist ed th a t the tim e has not come to go buck and they prevailed. This paper believed and still be- llvcs th a t the proposed tux cut woulo have been a bad thing. It oppose» the elim ination of the county agent home dem onstration ugen and It op posed the proposal to reduce the fu n i available for county roads. If the budget could be cut w ithout g rea ter loss to the county we were for such a cut. The county court feels th a t such a cut cannot be made and t is probably rig h t. At any rate we ^re going ahead in th e same con- trac tiv e way we have alw ays gone head and It is not likely th a t we will egret it. B ut the county officers and others who get public money should be Impressed w ith the taxpayers pos tton. We consider It wholly wrong In recom mending to the county court th a t the office of county ag ric u ltu rist be abol ished. The present able and active holder of th a t position, Mr. Fred Bennion, is engaged in constructive work of positive v d u e to U m atilla county many tim es the am ount of his salary. To dispense w ith his services In order to save a few thousand dol lars a year will be a step backw ard th a t U m atilla county cannot afford. In the single Instance of the develop m ent of the seeed potato on W eston m ountain, and th is Is only one of his many-sided and ever-useful activities, Mr. Bennion will have added and in fact is adding to U m atilla county’s resources productive w ealth com pared to which his salary is a mere bagatelle. In view of the fact th a t num erous largely-signed petitions will come to the court from every section of th e county u rg in g th a t Mr. Bennion be retained, and th e fact th a t the proposal to abolish his office was approved at th e taxpayers’ m eet ing by only a slig h t m argin and ob viously w ilhout careful consideration we feel th a t the county court will be wholly Justified In keeping th is fa ith ful and com petent serv an t on th e payroll.
