There was no apparent difference in the gain made, the sunflowers making •more gains in one test and less in another. Silage made from corn stover, corn without ears, proved palatable and satisfactory. It carried much more water and fiber than silage from ear corn, and its value was proportionate ly less. • Cloves straw has not yet been used satisfactorily as silage. Peas and bald barley silage and al falfa and bald barley silage gave ex cellent results for fattening steers and lambs and for wintering calves and yearlings. Large quantities of sunflowers and of peas and bald barley silage will be put up at the Eastern Oregon branch station this winter. Pig Fattening—Fish meal is an ex cellent supplement in pig feeding and equal to tankage. Pigs getting garbage with rape or wheat pasture in addition to grain do not need supplementary protein. If runts are separated from the bunch and given good feed they will make normal gains. Molasses not above 40 per cent of the ration has a value nearly as high as barley. This was especially true of alfalfa from old stands, and on the heavy soil types. —Experiment station, O. A. C. Silage is fed to. fattening steers in bunks at the Eastern Oregon branch station. About 10 pounds a day is fed at the start, the amount being in creased to 20 to 30 pounds as needed in two or three days. Danger of an imals going off feed on silage is slight. If more than 15 pounds per head is fed a day, it should be given in two feedings, morning and evening —Animal husbandry, O. A. C. Garden slugs are repelled by Bar deaux mixture, wet or dry, and read ily poisoned by calcium arsenate mix ed with 16 times as much chopped lettuce or other succulent leaves. Hence by spreading the Bordeaux, 4- 4-50, on the plants to be protected, and scattering the poisoned leaves about them, both protection of I he plants and destruction of the slugs can be had.—Entomology, O. A. G. Newtons showed highest per cent- age of fruit set on trees that had been fertilized twice with nitrate of soda, once on the test year and one the year previous. The trees of these tests are badly devitalized and cap able of using large amounts of nitro gen.—Horticulture, O. A. C. Fish may be preserved by salting and smoking, the degree to depend on the length of time they are to be kept. For early use salting over night with light smoking the next day is sufficient. Green hard woods such as maple, ash and willow are best.—Home Economics, O. A. C. The influence of the male in breed ing up the laying qualities of the flock is emphasized as a highly prac tical means. While no complete an alysis has been made of data gather- ed by the department, the facts in dicate that high egg production is not inherited from one parent only.— Poultry, O. A. C. Queen bees deteriorate after the first season as a rule, and should be replaced every year by good Italian queens, either purchased from some reliable queen breeder or reared by the beekeeper from his best stock.— Entomology, O. A. C. Children who dislike milk may be induced to take it freely through a straw or tube, or In disguised form with other foods, soup, cooked with cereals, custards, puddings, cream sauce on vegetables, and cocoa.— Home economics, O. A. C. Laying hens must have food con taining egg making elements. An- alysis show the following: Ash, 12.5 per cent, water, 65.7; protein, 11.4; fat. 8.9. The hen cannot counterfiet her product and must have the real elements In sufficient quantity to manufacture eggs out of surplus feed.—Poultry, O. A. C. A ton of alfalfa worth *20 a ton when fed alone and unchopped was worth *25 a ton fed chopped to fat- tening steers at the Eastern Oregon branch experiment station. Under most favorable conditions the cost of chopping was *2.75 a ton. The gain in feeding value from chopping when fed with grain did not justify the cost except when alfalfa prices were more than *25 a ton.
