THE H ermiston H erald VOL. XI HERMISTON. UMATILLA COUNTY. OREGON. SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 8. 1917 EXPLANATION OF CREAM AND MILK TEST LAW U would seem that considerable mis- apprehension exists among dairy farm- ers relative to the requirements of the law passed by the legislative assembly of 1917, which requires the pasteurize- tíos of all milk and cream sold to con sumere and all by products of creamer ies or cheese factories if not produced from tuberculin tested cows. The exact text of the law, which is known s Chapter 332 of the General Laws of 1917, section 2 of which reads as fol lows: “That from and after September 1, 1917, it shall be unlawful for any per- son, firm, company, corporation or association, to sell or offer or expose tarsale or exchange, for human con sumption any milk from cows that have not passed the tuberculin test, unless such milk shall have been pas teurized as hereinafter provided. It is understood and hereby expressly sated that nothing in this section shall apply to the delivery of milk or cream to creameries, cheese or con- deosed milk factories by the producer of such milk or cream, or in bulk to the wholesale trade.” It will be noted from the reading of the above that this part of the law does not apply in any way whatever to toy dairy farmer who is selling his milk orcream to a condensery, cream- ery, cheese factory, milk depot or any manufacturing plant, but said con- densery, creamery, cheese factory, milk depot or manufacturing plant are held responsible for the process ot SOCIETY WOMEN TO THE RESCUE DAIRY AND HOG SHOW TO BE HELD THIS YEAR RANCHER MEETS WITH SERIOUS ACCIDENT DEATH TAKES POPULAR YOUNG MARRIED LADY The many friends of S L Carson will be pained to learn of his nearly fatal accident that occurred on Satur day of last week on his ranch a mile and a half northwest of town. It ap pears Mr. Carson was out on horse back after bis cows and in going along a steep bank of the Umatilla river the horse lost bis footing, slipped and fell with Mr. Carson down to the water’s edge, tramping on and rolling over him several times as they de scendí d the steep slope. The horse went home and soon the alarm was spread that Sam was broken up badly and nearly trampled to death. Dr. Reid was called and pronounced him very badly broken up Dr. Henderson of Pendleton was immediately sum moned and came down on the motor. After a careful examination it was de cided he had a collar bone broken, one hin somewhat fractured and several bad bruises, but would pull through with proper care. It is not generally known that S. L. Is a direct descendant of the famous Indian fighter, Kit Carson, but such is the case and Mr. Carson is not easily put “down and out,” in fact this is the first time he was ever “knocked off bis pins.” At present writing he is gett ing along as well as could be expected. Without any warning the grim reaper swept from the midst of this community Friday of last week Mrs. Anna M Anderson, respected, well liked and popular with all Hermiston people of her acquaintance. Death came at 2:30 on the above day, presum ably from heart trouble, and when the news spread great sorrow was ex pressed for the busband and their only child, a daughter that became mother less when but seven days old. In the grief of Mr Anderson the sympathy and help of the community was ex tended, and the remains of his wife as they were taken to me train last Satur day for shipment to Portland were escorted by many friends of the fam ily. The funeral services were held Monday of this week in the above city, Rev. L. P. Kj :11er preaching the sermon. ELDERTA PEACHES ARE DEING SHIPPED OUT Photo by American Press Association. A representative meeting of business men and ranchers was held Monday night in the Civic Center rooms under the auspices of the Commercial club to discuss important questions, chief among them being as to whether the dairy and bog show would be held thia year. After a general discussion, practically a unanimous vote showed that all were In favor ot Its being held, and willingness on the part of dairy- men and hog raisers to bring in their stock was not lacking. Heretofore it has been necessary for the committee io charge to make fre quent visita lo ranchers to induce them to take an Interest and prepare their exhibits, but the farmers at the meet ing gave assurance that the exhibits would be forthcoming without the effort of former years, and to balance this up the people of the town of Her miston stand ready to assume the ex- pense incident to the show, aside from the amount donated by the county. This settled, a general committee was appointed to make plans for the annual event, and their findings, to gether with the dates when the show will be held this fall, will be announced later. At the meeting it was decided to maintain the rest room, it being shown that the institution is liberally patron ized by old and young alike and one of the greatest boons the city has ever had Tom Fraser was again made presi- dent of t he Commercial club at the meeting and Dr. F.
