the river a little way west of Hermis-
ton, where wheat, alfalfa, rye, etc , is
raised quite extensively.
The company has 14,000 acres in the
west end project, which is watered by
about 55 miles of main and distribut
ing canals. After tbe construction of
these canals and laterals in 1912, water
was diverted through tbe company’s
headgate on the Umatilla river at
Echo, thus watering lower Butter
ereek in the eastern portion and carry­
ing tbe life giving fluid to the west
ora part of the project. Of course
that portion situated in the Butter
creek valley is away ahead of other
portions in improvement, stacks upon
sacks and acre after acre of alfalfa
now to be seen there being mute evi­
dence of the fact. Nevertheless, the
western end of this vast domain has
seen wonderful improvement since the
water was turned on, and present in­
dications are that it will settle up
steadily from now on.
Westland, on the cutoff of the O. W.
railway six miles from Hermiston,
situated right in the heart of the pro­
ject, Is fas coming to tbe front as a
producer of alfalfe, the tonnage
shipped from that point during the
past year amounting to 910,800. A
