Council Sets Wednesday, May 2 as Cleanup Day. VOL. T his health exam ination is be ing a rran g e d by the executive sec re ta ry of the county health asso ciation, Mrs. P. R. W hiteside, a s sisted by County N urses Maud A. H icks and E llen A. P ost, in con nection w ith national health week w hich is now univ ersally observed. G erm an is one of the best known men in P o rtlan d and the one m ost likely to be n o m in at ed and elected county com m is sioner. He is undoubtedly th e m an best qualified th ro u g h muny years of business experience and contact w ith all classes to take a place of resp o n sib ility along w ith Com mis sio n ers Phegley and Morse and guide the business affairs of the county. A b rief sketch of his life shows a varied experience and success won by hard work. G erm an was born in London, E ngland, in 1879. When he was six yeurs old he cam e w ith Ills people to the United S tate s and Chicago, and in an o th er six years to P o rt land. The first jobs he landed in P o rtlan d w ere as m essenger and cash hoy for th ree big d ep artm en t sto res and m essenger com panies. In 1895, w hen he w as 16, young G erm an and an o th er lad traveled on bicycles from P o rtlan d to Den ver, Colorado, in quest of w ork anil ad v en tu re. By doing odd jobs he lived in Denver for one w inter. The year follow ing, he sp en t in Omaha, w here he m ade Ills way by doing household Jobs for a strin g of em ployers in residence d istric ts. La- te r he got a Job in th e O m aha Stock y ard s and saved enough money to get hack to P o rtlan d In 1900. R etu rn in g to P o rtlan d , he served as plck-and-shovel a rtis t for the P o rtlan d R ailw ay L ight & Pow er com pany, and luter becam e a p la t form m an for th e stre e t c a r system . His next move w as to pass a civil service exam ination for muil c a r rier and he served the governm ent four yeurs In th a t capacity. He w as m arried and w ith his $50 a m onth sa la ry su p p o rted his wife and tw o ch ild ren and paid out on a P o rtlan d H eights real e state ileal In 1910, he opened a real estate office on Sixth and B urnside and has been engaged continuously since th at tim e In th e sellin g of real estate, ap p ra isin g p ro p erties and negotiating m ortgage loans. Mr. G erm an has accum ulated lurge p ro p erty holdings since th a t tim e, is a su b stan tia l ta x p ay er, and his voting record in both sessions of the le g isla tu re indicates extrem e co n serv atio n in the m a tte r of u n n ecessary ex p en d itu re of public funds. He is th e p resid en t of the A ssociated In v esto rs, Incorporated, is p resid en t of th e com pany th a t bears his nam e, and is a d irecto r and vice p resid en t of th e Benjam in F ra n k lin S avings and Loan asso ciation of P o rtland. Mr. G erm an is a m em ber of the N ational A ssociation of Real E s ta te E xchanges, a m em ber of the N orthw est Real E state A ssociation, and has served as p resid en t of the P o rtlan d R ealty Board. He is a m em ber of th e Elks, N eighbors of W oodcraft, United A rtisan s and Woodmen of the W orld. He Is also S ecretary of S tate of th e Royal R osarians. C., w here they attended th e Colum bia co n fer ence of the L u th e ra n church. The Rev. Mr. Sandeen w as honored a t the g ath erin g by being elected to rep rese n t the conference a t the synodical m eeting to be held a t Des Moines, Iowa, th e first w eek in June. Dr. J. O. S tu re w as elected as laym en's delegate, and Mrs. Enoch Sandeen as delegate to re p resen t the conference m issionary society. The synodical m eeting to w hich the G resham persons have beeu elected as d elegates is a notable g athering, rep rese n tin g a m em ber ship of 400,000. D elegates from the United S tates and C anada will be present. It Is understood th a t the th ree elected from this locality will m ake an effort to atten d th e m eet ing a t Des Moines.
