won by hard work.
G erm an was born in London,
E ngland, in 1879. When he was six
yeurs old he cam e w ith Ills people
to the United S tate s and Chicago,
and in an o th er six years to P o rt
land. The first jobs he landed in
P o rtlan d w ere as m essenger and
cash hoy for th ree big d ep artm en t
sto res and m essenger com panies.
In 1895, w hen he w as 16, young
G erm an and an o th er lad traveled
on bicycles from P o rtlan d to Den
ver, Colorado, in quest of w ork anil
ad v en tu re. By doing odd jobs he
lived in Denver for one w inter. The
year follow ing, he sp en t in Omaha,
w here he m ade Ills way by doing
household Jobs for a strin g of em
ployers in residence d istric ts. La-
te r he got a Job in th e O m aha Stock
y ard s and saved enough money to
get hack to P o rtlan d In 1900.
R etu rn in g to P o rtlan d , he served
as plck-and-shovel a rtis t for the
P o rtlan d R ailw ay L ight & Pow er
com pany, and luter becam e a p la t

His next move w as to pass a civil
service exam ination for muil c a r
rier and he served the governm ent
four yeurs In th a t capacity. He

ence of the L u th e ra n church. The
Rev. Mr. Sandeen w as honored a t
the g ath erin g by being elected to
rep rese n t the conference a t the
synodical m eeting to be held a t
Des Moines, Iowa, th e first w eek in
June. Dr. J. O. S tu re w as elected
as laym en's delegate, and Mrs.
Enoch Sandeen as delegate to re p
resen t the conference m issionary
society.

Dr. C. R. Sw anson of S eattle was
re-elected p resid en t for th e 16th
tim e of th e conference w hich Just
closed. He holds the record in th e
en tire synod for length of service.
