HOLIDAY OUTLOOK, B y ro n D e Y o u n g ’s C o w s H a v e P a la c e o f B arn fo r a H o m e A recen t visit to th e w onderful new b arn w hich Byron De Young built d u rin g the past sum m er on his farm four m iles w est of G resh am was a revelation to the visitors who had alw ays supposed th a t a barn w as a barn, som ew hat dark, ill-sm elling d rafty and necessarily cobwebby and dusty. T he idea of having a barn equipped w ith "all m odern conveniences" w as a new one. B ut th is barn is different. T h ere is stanchion room for 56 anim als. At p rese n t Mr. De Young has 45 cows m ilking. T he herd co n sists of six p u rebred G uernseys, tw o p u rebred sire s of the sam e breed aud th e rem ain d er about equally divided betw een grade G uernseys and H oisteins. T his barn, w hich is said by in sp ecto rs to be one of th e finest In th e sta te of Oregon, has cost a p proxim ately $12,000, including the electric lighting and w ater system s and th e a p p a ra tu s for han d lin g the m ilk. T he farm on w hich th is g reat d airy is being developed is the fo rm er A rth u r H einey place. The 40 ac res is m ostly devoted to the grow ing of corn for silage, though a p a rt of it is in meadow. Mr. and Mrs. DeYoung bought the place about tw o and a half y ears ago, though they only recently moved onto it from th e ir form er hom e n ear D am ascus. They have had th e residence renovated and, with a new coat of p ain t on the outside, It is an a ttra c tiv e dw elling.
