L indbergh—the hero of the day! th e intrepid youth! L indbergh—the m ost outstanding exam ple of the m odern sp irit of achievem ent. L indbergh- the unassum ing tem perate, considerate, fea rle ss—the conqueror! L indbergh is an A m erican and we a re proud of him and bis s ta r t ling achievem ent. He Is of Sw edish and Irish descent, evident ly a good com bination, producing th oughtful, alm ost stoical patience and determ ination with sim plicity, good hum or, daring and dash. Ho is a cred it to his la th e r (deceased), one of M innesota’s m ost w orthy and influential citizens. He is a credit to his m other, a chem istry te ac h er in a D etroit high school, a line type of woman. He lias won a distinguished honor for his country and his nam e will go down in history. Hut young L indbergh belongs not only to America. He belongs to civilization, to hum anity. By his accom plishm ent the race moves up a long step in the achievem ent of its purpose, ideals and destiny—to conquer and use the forces God has ordained for our developm ent and use. W hat L indbergh lias done o thers can and will do. W hat lie has done will become common afte r a w hile — hut he Is the hero who first showed it could be done. A DEDICATION. T he new s of the killing Sunday afternoon of L ester M. Wood, shf r- iff of C lark county, W ashington, in cold blood by a m urderous boot legger, shooting from am bush, brings deep sorrow to th e h ea rts of all good citizens w hether ac q u ain t ed w ith the m an and his fam ily or not. T he officer, with a deputy, was search in g for a nest of bootleggers In the hills no rth east of V ancouver and evidently was shout to a p p re hend them when n shot rang out from the hushes anti the sheriff fell, m o rtally wounded. T he victim was a son of Col. W. H. Wood, of V ancouver, th e well know n auctioneer. Both, fath er and son are well known In G resh am and vietnlty. T hat such a dastardly deed could occur right In the h eart of a mod ern civilized com m unity and w ith no other motive th an the protection of an unlaw ful and n efarious linsl- nesss seem s incredible. But such Is th e desperate and m urderous c h a ra c te r of those who ally th em selves with the devil In th e prom o tion of a practice th a t is. alw ays has been and alw ays will be, under the cu rse of the Almighty. Such an act brin g s to us a tru e r sense of the difficult and dangerous situ atio n we as a nation face In all ou r efforts to enforce law. m o rta li ty and righteousness again st one of th e m ost dam ning and destructive forces th a t ever m enaced the race. S trong drink Is th e m other of a cohort of crim es. How. io the face of such crim es as this, and their num ber Is legion, men who put on a p reten se of de cency and good citizenship can by word ami act lend even th e sem blance of encouragem ent to the liquor b usiness and try to break down the p rinciple and effort of law enforcem ent is ntore than we can understand But w e are sure of this, th a t this m urderous act, and many o thers like It. lead us to rededlcuts o u r self. h eart and brain and hand, to the utm ost reasonable effort to support the purpose, legal and m oral to rid th is country and the mirth of tills blight o n hum anity. T he bootlegger is potentially a m urdered at h eart. He m an u fac tu re s a poison th a t kills directly or Indirectly and lie know s it effect. He has no go,-d purpose, lie knows he m akes and sells w hat destroys both body and soul and his only oh- Ject Is or can lie the money he can th u s obtain. H>mce tie Is most despicable and traito ro u s We urge th at every Am erican ritizi n convict« il «if boot leu ding h« disfranchised, and every alien be deported. T his along w ith other m eans of enforcem ent would help some. The P E 1*. com pany pays taxes th is year In Oregon in the am ount of $1,405.ni.;.
