The W alius are enjoying a new O verland-6 coach recently purchased from H essel Im plem ent com pany of G resham . E. Johnson was a t home over the last week end. He is w orking w ith the G rand Ronde L um ber com pany, in w hich he has an interest. E lm er C randall and fam ily have moved back to th e ir place from Cushm an, W ashington, w here they have been for th e p ast eig h t years operating an apple orchard. Mr. and Mrs. W. P atterso n are helping to ca re for th e b erries on the D onaugh place for Mr. Holden of P ortland, who has ren ted it. T hey enjoyed a recent visit to Wis- eonsin but are glad to he back in Oegon. A fishing trip to E agle Creek w as I enjoyed by Mr. and Mrs. H. Olby and the fo rm er's sister, Mrs. C hrist- i offersou and fam ily. They m anaged to land 1 fine tro u t. Mrs. R. W. Mundliu. who is in ill health, is staying in P o rtlan d for a short time. One of her children is w ith her and is sick w ith m easles. T hen education is neces sa ry as a beacon to guide th e n a tion and its perplexed leaders. By being th rifty one does not n ecessarily have to be stingy b u t live in com fort and save for th e so-called "rain y -d ay .” T he influence of th e religious serv ices of th e church in m aking good citizens is im m easurable be ca u se it is an in sp iratio n to rig h t living, encourages educational and social activities, and also en co u r ages ch a ritab le en terp rises. T hus if th is republic is to re main the land of the free and con tinue to grow in stre n g th and u se fulness, both th e native and fo r eign born who exercise th e rig h ts of suffrage m ust all know the m eaning of dem ocracy and reg ard the duties and obligations of c iti zens w ith sincere, ea rn e st devotion. Our governm ent is a th in g of w hich m an, woman and child should be proud, and everyone should striv e to keep it in th e m ost perfect condition. To do so, in th e first place, we m ust all live clean, health y lives, and not re so rt to tobacco, drugs, or o th e r alcholic drinks. T hese th ree th in g s a re th e m ain cau se of crim e in th e United S tates,—yes, even in the w hole w orld. Every resid en t of the United S tate s should be a good citizen. By th a t I m ean they should not gam ble or cheat in any way. Also, they should obey all th e law s of th eir state, and if they catch som e o ne b reaking th e law or law s, it is th eir duty to th e sta te and people to re p o rt them . E very person should be carefu l not to endanger the lives of oth er people. T here a re m any w ays of doing so. One of th e m ost dangerous evils to h u m an lives is the reck less driving of an autom obile. T hen th e re is th e d anger of shooting someone w hile hunting. Many people have been killed or w ounded because of being m istaken for game. A good citizen should alw ays let the law ta k e its course and not in te rfe re w ith it in any way. Many people have reso rted to "mob vio lence" because they say th e law is to - slow. A good tra in in g school for g irls is the Camp F ire G irls. It is n e a r ly the sam e as th e Boy Scouts. Every boy and g irl should play fair in study and in play. They should alw ays be good sports. If you get beaten in a fair fight, don't kick" about it. If you did your best, w hat m ore could you do? Why, not a thing.
