A new gas has been developed by th e du P o n t De N em ours com pany, and is now being m an u factu red by th e G eneral M otors Chem ical com pany, w hich is said to give m ore pep to th e gasoline, g rea tly increasin g the m ileage per gallon and lessening the co st per mile of au to travel. T he new gas is called ethyl gas. It Is in enorm ous dem and in th e east and w ill, it is said, in a few m onths be available on th e Pacific coast. P rocesses of m an u fa ctu re a re being de veloped rapidly. T he new gas is m ade se p a ra te from th e gasoline and mixed w ith th e la t te r at the filling sta tio n s w hen ethel- lzed gasoline is ordered by th e m o to rist. Special m achines are m ade to do the m ixing as th e gas is pum ped in. E thyl gas is said to cause a m ore even explosion, th u s elim inating the h arm fu l “knock” w hen a ca r is q u ic k ly accelerated or w hen laboring up a hill. T he use of ethyl gas it is de clared w ill m ake possible th e o p e ra tion of engines w ith even higher com p ression th an tho se w hich have been used in the la st few y ea rs in racin g cars. W ith h ig h er com pression m uch sm aller engine w ill develope g re a te r horsepow er and will con sum e less gasoline. T his is very In terestin g and very good if true. B ut we a re rem inded of the need of pepping up th e hum an elem ent in con nectlon with autom obile driving and all hum an activities. Day by day m en are tak in g into th e ir h ands m ore efficient m achines and m ore d a n g e r ous and pow erful m a teria ls. T his is the sp irit of th is elec trica l, m otorized age.
