A ttendance a t th e U niversity is increasing so fast th a t it is outgrow ing the facilities. A ttendance w ithin the p ast four y ears has increased 39 per cent. D uring the sam e period the U ni v ersity ’s Income from the sta te has In creased but 5 per cent. All of th e Uni v ersity 's buildings a re crowded. Some of them are over-crowded. Not only is the atten d an ce growing, but th e rate of in crease in th e atten d an ce is grow ing. T hese facts and the fu rth e r one th a t th e U niversity prefers not to ask appropriations from th e o v er-taied pub lic for increased facilities, furnish the reasons for th e gift campaign. T his cam paign was in augurated a y ear ago, but it has only recently b e come fully organized and begun to a t tain real headw ay. T he first big effort of th e cam paign Is th a t to be made by th e alum ni from May 9 to May 30. W ith the $1,000,000 which the alum ni propose to raise It is Intended to pro vide a new library, a gym nasium and a splendid m em orial court. C itizens of Eugene in a m ass m eeting held r e cently have pledged them selves to pro vide $500,000 for a splendid auditorium to be built on th e U niversity campus, big enough to accom m odate from 5,000 to 6,000 stu d en ts. At present It Is not possible to hold an assem bly of all stu d ents Indoors, because th e re is no building at th e U niversity which will accom m odate th e 2,400 stu d en ts now In attendance. The cu rren t stu d en t body has pledged as Its contribution to the gift cam paign th e funds necessary to supply a building for th e S tu d en ts' Union. T he alum ni of th e U niversity are tak in g the lead in th e cam paign. A fter they have com pleted th eir sh are of the work and the fund, a sim ilar drive to th e irs Is to be m ade am ong th e citi zens of Oregon generally.
