T he cam paign Inaugurated in behalf
of th e U niversity of Oregon to obtain
$5,000,000 in five years through gifts
has reached th e activ e stage of its
progress. On May 9 th ere will be In
augurated by th e U niversity alum ni,
who have tak en upon them selves the
task of raisin g $1,000,000 of the sched

dents of the U niversity everyw here,
the world over, a re to participate.
N ecessity Is th e spur which is driv
ing th e U niversity of Oregon gift cam
paign. A ttendance a t th e U niversity is
increasing so fast th a t it is outgrow ing
the facilities. A ttendance w ithin the
p ast four y ears has increased 39 per
cent. D uring the sam e period the U ni
v ersity ’s Income from the sta te has In
creased but 5 per cent. All of th e Uni
v ersity 's buildings a re crowded. Some
of them are over-crowded. Not only is
the atten d an ce growing, but th e rate
of in crease in th e atten d an ce is grow
ing. T hese facts and the fu rth e r one
th a t th e U niversity prefers not to ask
appropriations from th e o v er-taied pub

reasons for th e gift campaign.
T his cam paign was in augurated a

come fully organized and begun to a t
tain real headw ay. T he first big effort
of th e cam paign Is th a t to be made by
th e alum ni from May 9 to May 30.
W ith the $1,000,000 which the alum ni
propose to raise It is Intended to pro

splendid m em orial court. C itizens of
Eugene in a m ass m eeting held r e

vide $500,000 for a splendid auditorium
to be built on th e U niversity campus,
big enough to accom m odate from 5,000
to 6,000 stu d en ts. At present It Is not
possible to hold an assem bly of all stu
d ents Indoors, because th e re is no
building at th e U niversity which will
accom m odate th e 2,400 stu d en ts now In
attendance. The cu rren t stu d en t body
has pledged as Its contribution to the
gift cam paign th e funds necessary to
supply a building for th e S tu d en ts'
Union.
T he alum ni of th e U niversity are
tak in g the lead in th e cam paign. A fter
they have com pleted th eir sh are of the
work and the fund, a sim ilar drive to
th e irs Is to be m ade am ong th e citi
zens of Oregon generally. Through the
alum ni drive It is expected th a t the
scope end purpoke of the plan will be
come fam iliar to th e public generally,
so th a t the progress of the sta te wide
cam paign to come la ter will lie facili
tated E fforts also are being m ade to
en list the co n trib u tio n s of persons of
m eans everyw here who have special
reasons for in te re st In the U niversity
