Glories stream jrom heaven ajar, Heav'nly hosts sing Alleluia, Christ the Savior is born, Christ the Savior is born! Silent night! Holy night! All is calm, all is bright! Round yon virgin mother and child. Holy Injant, so tender and mild, Sleep in heavenly peace, Sleep in heavenly peace. 'HAT a hush of peace, what a deep emotion of joy, comes over the world on Christmas Eve. No words can fully express the joyous sentiments that well up in every loving heart at this season of the year. All Christendom enacts again the nativity scene of Bethlehem’s manger. In one’s thought is pictured the lowly surroundings at the inn, the mother and child, the burst of heavenly light, the song of the angel chior and the adoration of the wondering shep herds. After nearly twenty centuries the scene becomes vivid to human minds and all hearts are inspired with wonder, love and praise. Giving gifts at Christmas is as natural as the desire to perpetuate the observance of the world’s greatest event. In all gifts properly given the love, spirit and purpose of the greatest gift is passed on to others. This is not outwardly the most peaceful and promising Christmastime that the world has seen. There still exist much of selfishness, strife, suffering and sin. These mar the peacefulness that should mark the Christmastide. Is there not in this fact, however, additional reason why those who are well favored should give all possible expression to the generous spirit of Christmas? W MERCHANTS CO-OPERATE WITH SANTA CLAUS The merchants of Gresham and vicinity have a- gain given the Outlook their hearty support, making it possible to issue this another splendid Holiday number. Practically all the business places of Gresham are represented in this issue, also several stores in near by localities. The two public service companies which supply this locality with electricity and gas have been generous in their support. The Outlook has tried on its part to make the paper representative of the business, social, educa tional and religious activities of the locality. On AYLSWORTH, B. W. There probably never was a better display of hol iday wares shown in Gresham than this season. The times are not flush and many find the pocket book rather flat. But even the poorest cannot let the Christmas season pass without some remembrance given to loved ones. There is a splendid opportun ity to make this a practical Christmas and give use ful gifts. The kiddies must have toys and there are fine displays of these in Gresham stores.
