W hen in Ju n e of 1917 th e A. L. A. in a u g u ra t ed plans for the extension of library service into every b ranch of th e gov ern m e n t w ar service, it found the lib ra ria n s of Oregon m ost w illing co ad ju to rs. U nder th e first plans for th e w ork, the h e a d q u a rte rs fo r the N orthw est sta te s w ere located in P o rtla n d , and o u r lib ra ria n , Miss Mary F ran ces Isom , was appointed d istrib u to r fo r th e whole northw est. Books began to come in from all di rections. The ac tu a l w ork of d istrib u tin g them began w ith sm all collec tions se n t to the men on g u a rd a t th e bridges, tu n n els and docks th ro u g h o u t th e state. A n um ber of sto u t w ooden cases, fitted w ith shelves and having a capacity of approxim ately 60 books, w ere m ade fo r th e double purpose of tra n sp o rtin g th e books safely and of serving as a bookcase in the cam ps to w hich they w ere sent. T hese cases have “ S oldier’s L ib rary " stenciled on the cover, and, as th e ir use has been extended g rea tly since th e first days of th e work, they may still be seen doing duty in m any p ar ts of th e sta te . of th e P o rtlan d Public L ib rary w here they w ere carefu lly so rted and prep ared for use in th e cam ps by th e volunteer work of th e lib ra ria n s in the evenings and on th e ir h alf holi days.
