T he figures are stag g erin g , but tru e , for it is show n th a t 150,000,000 g allons were used at a cost av erag in g 20 cents a g al lon. A bout o ne-half of th e money paid o u t was se n t to th e ea st o r C ali fo rn ia and never cam e back. The th irty m illions paid o u t am o u n ts to m ore th a n th e to ta l production of lu m b er in O regon fo r la st y ear; and the fifteen m illions th a t never cam e back is ab o u t th e value of th e 1916 w heat crop.
