th e people of th e U nited Status

n itions in d u stry has not been profit­
able to th e whole co u n try , especially
on th is coast, because it has upset its
in d u stria l estab lish m en t, its finan­
cial eq u ilib riu m and th e norm al
course of business to a rem a rk a b le
degree, and It was the s ta rtin g point
of much of th e ab su rd inflation th a t
has ch aracterized
w hat o th erw ise
m ight have become a highly profit­
able and w holesom e prosperity.
It will not he a bad th in g fo r us If
long before th e end of th e w ar the
m any p lan ts th a t have left th e ir o r­
din ary lines of m a n u fa ctu re for the
m ore tem p tin g profits of m u nitions
a re com pelled to re tu rn to th e pro­
duction of th e a rticle s of UBe to
which they devoted them selves be­
fore th e o u tb rea k of th e war. It Is
certain ly b e tte r th a t th is reco n v er­
sion should begin now th a n to come
with a shock at th e end. It would be
b e tte r for th e atm o sp h ere to be re­
leased from th e balloon g rad u ally
th an to have th e th lu g b u rst.
T he cessation of th e m u nitions
trad e will accom plish a n o th e r thing
th a t will be m uch m ore beneficial
th an the u n th in k in g elem ent dream s
of— th e red u ctio n of gold im ports.

p aper show th a t *30,000,000 was
paid for " g a s’ by th e au to ow ners of
Oregon d u rin g 1916. T he figures are
stag g erin g , but tru e , for it is show n
th a t 150,000,000 g allons were used
at a cost av erag in g 20 cents a g al­
lon. A bout o ne-half of th e money
paid o u t was se n t to th e ea st o r C ali­
fo rn ia and never cam e back. The
th irty m illions paid o u t am o u n ts to
m ore th a n th e to ta l production of
lu m b er in O regon fo r la st y ear; and
the fifteen m illions th a t never cam e
back is ab o u t th e value of th e 1916
w heat crop.
Add to th e above figures th e cost
and upkeep of ab o u t 10,000 new a u ­
tom obiles last year, and the rep airs
on th e o th e r 20,000 old ones, and
