T he sto ry , briefly r e n te d , was told
by th e victim , Mrs. Mabel Myers,
y esterd ay at Good S am a ritan hospi­
tal, w here she was tak en by Sheriff
H u rlb u rt. H er sta te m e n t is as fo l­

o’clock to v isit my sister-in -law , Mrs.
Lichty, who lives n ea r th e Base Line
road. 1 had gofie ab o u t six blocks
up th e road when I m et a m an. T he
road was m uddy th e re ; th a t is, it was
full of p u d d les, covered w ith a thin
co atin g of ice. He had fixed a n u m ­
b er of p la n k s across th e puddles. He
told m e to w ait a m in u te and he
w ould help m e across.
"T h en , ju s t as I s ta rte d to w alk
o v er th e p la n k s he g rab b ed me. He
said , 'C om e back to my c a b in !’ I
s ta rte d to fight and scream . T hen
he g rab b ed m e tig h t an d put my
head in a deep m ud puddle. T hree
tim es he forced my head >’..d e r w a­
te r. I w as very w eak an d sick by
th is tim e .”

lips found Mrs. M yers’ h a t n ex t m o rn ­
ing. I t w as a red k n it s k a tin g cap
